If I were you I'd rely on the train. Circular Quay station is real close to the shangrila. Traffic in Sydney is a whole other animal you don't want to be on the wrong side of. Also a taxi from the airport to the city won't be cheap. Not less than $30.

You'll have to check the fare class. I booked through AA once and received nothing for it through Qantas, no points, no status credits, nothing. A quick Google search will pull up the Qantas page for you.

I've actually been in this situation before and most "decent" airlines will rebook you for free at the airport. I guess the key term is "at the airport" though.

Another word of caution for the driving option is the speed on the highways. 130 - 140 kmh is standard once you get out in the desert. For the unsuspecting it can be a bit white knuckle.

I flew UA once SFO to SYD years ago as they had just started the route so fares were extremely cheap. WORST. The worst trans pacific flight I've ever had. Jetstar to Hawaii was leaps and bounds ahead this service.
