Luckily I had an old card on file that they tried to charge and I got an email from them and sms from amex that the charge was declined. I replied to their email and asked that the account be cancelled, and they replied to confirm it was.

Seating aside, shouldn't you be able to contact them and request a change at no cost? From my experience, the notice of change email says something like if the change is more than 2? Hrs difference, then you can request another change to something that suits.

From my experience, it's registered as the original booking class. If you're booking via DL, it'll be easy to see the economy fare class when you book as thy overtly show it. Then they offer you the comfort option as an add on.
