I think the biggest issue for VA is the lounge space issue. Lounges are already hitting capacity in peak times.

You should have been able to change it up to 24hrs after departure unless I'm mistaken. Sounds like another case of bad service from overseas call centres. As for the site being down, not great for you but everyone was given plenty of notice.

Re: Approaches for dealing with 'electronic devices off' I doubt the plane engineers are the ones setting the electronic devices rule. They are more likely to be made by someone whose experience in radio communications interference is 2 minutes skimming some Wikipedia articles.
