I loath flying at night. My next trip Sydney / LHR will be via Hong Kong. Fly direct there, have a sleep (there was a discussion sometime ago about pubs close to the airport), then fly Hong Kong / LHR on QF029 - daylight flight. Leaves 8.00am arrives 3.30pm.

Why don't you have a short discussion with them about your perception of their service before you leave? Perhaps there is a staff problem that needs to be addressed.

Qantas Link have a great service that is not generally known. Their carry on hand luggage allowance is low and the lockers quite small. However, if you have "reasonable size" bag, when you check in, ask if your bag can be put through as "priority hand luggage". They will look at it, sometimes...
