The ongoing Finnair strikes/issues this year have been quite disappointing. I was due to fly with Finnair in March and it was announced the day before my flight that there would be a big strike on the day of my flight with many flights cancelled. I couldn't risk not getting to my destination...

Yes, good point. Looking a bit more closely , the flight times between AKL and ADL are just a bit too long to make this work (efficiently) both ways.

As @jrfsp says, this only connects to JFK and not from. But still, for those originating in NZ, something other than a 6am departure from AKL is quite nice.
