I've had first host greet me in arrival when I've had connections and taken me there in a buggy. If you don't have any connections I'm not sure what they would do on arrival.

It really depends on the hotel. I've stayed at the sky suites in Las Vegas twice on FHR rates. Once booked a one bed suite and was upgraded to a 2 bed suite. Booked a 2 bed suite the next time and was upgraded to a 6,000 sq ft monster of a suite.

You need to distinguish crew from other staff. A QF staff member travelling for business purposes would be given a seat just like a fare paying passenger. I assume also that once you start getting higher in management the benefits improve and someone on leisure travel would trump a FF upgrade...

But why join a queue voluntarily? I think one of the main reasons I maintain status is so I don't have to join queues. Bad marketing. Instead they should say "avoid the queue" and then every FF would sign up.
