What happens when transiting DXB on QF1,2,9,10?

QF1,9 SYD, MEL -> LHR
Must all passengers disembark?
Must all carry-ons be taken off board?
Is carry-on re-screened for LAGs?

QF 2,10 LHR -> SYD, MEL
Must all passengers disembark?
Must all carry-ons be taken off board?
Is carry-on re-screened for LAGs? (This will be a YES with no carry-on if over 100ml)

I suspect it's a YES to all. But the re-screening of LAGs in the SYD, MEL -> LHR direction might allow tamper-proof LAG purchases to be carried-on?

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I'll be travelling on QF10 from LHR to MEL in September and wouldn't want to be stuck on board if it's going to 50+ degrees in the desert heat!

London bound all passengers and bags off. You then go to connections where you are re-screened. No idea how strict they are with lags because I had liquids in my bag and no questions asked. Once through security you can buy what you like and take back on board with no extra checks. Oddly the csm said gate screening is used in Dubai that wasn't the case when I flew on 21st April I suspect it only applies Australia bound.

Australia bound I reckon they would have a secondary screening point at the gate to confirm to the Australian Duty free racquet, read our "extra" security requirements so lags may be an issue.

QF1/QF9:

Yes all pax must disembark
Yes all carry ons must be taken with you - they clean the aircraft
Carry on is re-screened for LAGs at transit screening only (no screening at the gate)

QF2/QF10:

Yes all pax must disembark
Yes all carry ons must be taken with you - they clean the aircraft
Carry on is re-screened at BOTH transit screening AND at the gate - you can buy duty free but it must be boxed and it will be put in the aircraft hold. It then comes out via oversized baggage in MEL/SYD.

Thanks for the information! :)

Supplementary questions: The transit time of QF10 (LHR-MEL) in DXB is 1h 35m. Is that enough time to buy duty free in DXB? And then do you hand it over at the gate?

Should be fine, it only takes 5 minutes for them to box it, but keep in mind it's not that cheap.

Thanks markis10. I guess then it's a question of if it's cheaper than MEL or SYD arrival prices (which would not be hard!) or QF on-board prices...

All depends on what you want I suppose, JW XR21 is $115 USD in Dubai as per the linked price list, I picked up two on arrival in Sydney for $169 after using the $10 discount code last Monday.

are prescription meds (but UAE - Controlled) OK if left in checked luggage - remains on aircraft? (ie: avoids screening)

Like many people have stated the Security for transit in DXB whilst a bit of a nuisance (Like it is at every other airport in the world) the screening staff do complete the task faster than majority of airports I've found. (may have had extremely good luck on my few times through DXB).

With Alcohol, surprisingly The UK is usually cheaper in my experience, some may disagree, but DXB not a real lot of difference from SYD.

How does the box get to the aircraft? Do you take it to the gate or is there somewhere else to take it? (Sorry if this is a dumb question.)

Was there ever any response to this? I have the same question for my first transit through Dubai (specifically referring to panadeine forte in checked luggage). I have already assumed that sleeping tablets in carry-on are a no-no, particularly with the luggage security screening leaving from the FC lounge..

Checked transit luggage? That should be no problem. You're not importing them to Dubai.

That is what I would logically assume. However, would they view all locally prohibited medications the same as all illegal drugs? One would assume that there may be some mechanism (even random checks) to stop illegal drugs through the airport even in freight/cargo/checked luggage. While I strongly doubt there will be any issues at all, I always take the "hope for the best, but plan for the worst" approach to such things.

As per Avoid bringing banned items into the UAE (if you don't wan't to trust other traveller's experiences): "The UAE government prohibits drugs, narcotics and chemicals and before you enter the UAE, you are advised to take all precaution to ensure that you do not carry such substances;...".

As a transit passenger, you do not enter the UAE and do not pass through immigration or customs. The security checks you go through are of a public safety nature.

Thanks for that. The "real world' experience of other AFF travellers experiences are the best source of information for me. However - it can can be quite contradictory, so good to see it both from official sources and from actual experience.

I had a packet of nurofen (standard nurofen) in my carry on bags passing through DXB transit security, there was no interest in what was inside my bags other than standard security procedures seen at every airport worldwide. They are just private security staff and customs/immigration are nowhere around there.

A problem might happen if you unexpectely have to enter the UAE! (eg due to a cancelled flight) But that is a diifferent situation that you will have to resolve when and if it happens.

Good to know. Now I just need somebody to volunteer to test Nurofen Plus for me ;)
