I don't think the 'spin' was ever that QF was going to a fully $$ based system, more so that on an individual route (or group of routes) that the more flexible buckets (which cost more) would earn more --- the 'fairer' part

Then the supposed 'simpler' part was changing the zones to be geographic and not strictly mileage based - but as shown above there are just too many categories and exceptions for it to be simpler

I don't think the 'spin' was ever that QF was going to a fully $$ based system

Q: Why has Qantas made these changes to the Frequent Flyer program?
A: The changes to how you earn in the air are about creating a fairer, more simplified program designed to align the number of Qantas Points and Status credits you earn more closely with the fare you pay, where you fly and the carrier you choose.

This is the spin I was referring to, which is the first question and answer on the page explaining the changes.

The carrier part is a self-explanatory reference to the reduction in earnings on OW partners but I'm not sure what "where you fly" is meant to mean in this context.
Given the context of moving away from a mileage based system it can't mean how far you fly, because the new scheme is much less, not more closely, aligned with that.
The only viable meaning I can think of for it is that Qantas will reward you more for flying particular routes as they see fit.
Which is precisely the opaque and arbitrary nature of the scheme which people don't like.

CNN Business Traveller had Randy Petersen from FT stating that if the airline wants to charge more for more SCs, don't do it. He says you are playing into the revenue based system Getting the most from frequent flier miles - CNN Video

Of course, most of us don't have a choice.

Thanks for posting. FWIW my take was that Randy was saying yes, for elite miles/SC/LT status .... no, for FF points/miles.

I used to be able to re qualify for WP in one trip by maxing out my segments on RTW DONE4, I just checked my latest trip which MM showed as 1190 SC, then looked at QF earning table and comes in low 900's!!!

I had the option of Qf8 DFW-SYD but have taken AA and QF12 just to get the extra 70SC

The worse thing is Hkg-lhr getting half SC despite QF not even flying that route!!

I'm not sure this exactly fits into the OP. But it is "more simpler and fairer". Just looking at the SFO sale prices advertised on the QF big banner. SYD-SFO return is $1507-ish. ADL-SFO is $2260. $753 return ADL-SYD in Y seems a bit steep for a sale fare. Sure flexi is $800 return, but I'd bet $5 the $2260 fare isn't going to be flexi.

Is there any other east coast capital that costs $753 for return Y- to SYD? (Being as Adelaide is an east coast capital under the simpler and fairer system)
