Could be the J cabin is oversold, it's rare but it does happen (could be a pilot on duty travel assigned to the cabin, etc). Likely will sort itself out before check-in closes, if you still don't have a seat check with the gate agent.

We are flying QF2 LHR - SIN in a few weeks in paid J. We are both WP. EF showing J9
( even showing I 9!). EF seat map for J is wide open. Also getting this “ unable to select seats” message on this leg, but not on any other legs on the booking. Tried on the app and the website, but no dice.

Is this likely to be a QF2 issue? Is it worth a call to lock in our seat selections now?

Thank you @MEL_Traveller , exactly the right advice. The call centre agent ( Hobart - yay!!) said it is just a glitch that happens rarely and randomly, no idea why, and only the call centre can then allocate the seats. Seats now allocated on app, but still not allowing me to look at or change those seats myself. Flights are filling fast over the next month, so glad we didn’t wait until checkin, who knows where we would have been allocated.
