Article: Live Music in the Qantas Club

I was going through HKG last month and there was a live band playing up around Gate 11 (I think - was in a rush to 6 for my flight).
Rather it be out there in the general airport for the masses to enjoy and (as Aeryn suggests) the airline spent a bit more propping up the offering for F&B in the lounge.

Just a thought - maybe they've done it to drown out the noise of people complaining about Qantas offshoring call centres and playing down the issue of data leaks by their staff handing out login credentials over the phone...

I would rather listen to music than the 30 public announcements on the same flight from two different attendants, in two different lounges... Just saying...

On the flip side, having live music might drown out and cause you to miss an important announcement. 😓

The Qantas Club in Sydney now has live music on Friday and Sunday evenings:

Have you experienced this? What do you think of it?
I experienced it and thought it was awful. It was the last thing I wanted to hear after an exhausting day. Cheap and nasty!

Uggghhh. No thanks. The lounge is meant to be a quiet area, not a pub. And my guess is the music would inevitably be "inoffensive" Muzak, which is offensive to my ears and I'm sure many others'.

Not a lounge but NTL airport started this on Friday afternoons a few years ago.

I thought it was really nice, only con is you couldn’t hear the gate announcements 🤣

Maybe it would work better if they themed the songs? For example...
  • "Come Fly With Me" – Frank Sinatra
  • "Learning to Fly" – Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
  • "Jet Airliner" – Steve Miller Band
  • "Vertigo" – U2
  • "Free Fallin’" – Tom Petty
  • "Should I Stay or Should I Go" – The Clash
  • "No Sleep Till Brooklyn" – Beastie Boys
  • "Right Here Waiting" – Richard Marx
  • "Leaving on a Jet Plane" – Peter, Paul and Mary
  • "The Passenger" – Iggy Pop
  • "Homeward Bound" – Simon & Garfunkel
  • etc etc

You left out Foo Fighters! Learn to fly.

Great plan to reduce lounge overcrowding! 😂

The reason I go to the lounge is for quiet and a slight improvement in comfort, the absolute last thing I want is some coughpy cover band.
The Sydney domestic Qantas club is barely any different to the main terminal as it is, and the food offerings are so limited they might as well not bother any more.
