Just noticed that this flight moves to a 7:10 pm departure from the original 9:50 am. I can't recall an evening departure to the USA in the past. No communication to advise of the change. Just stumbled on it looking at Manage My Booking.

Is this common knowledge and I should have seen it somewhere?

News to me but good news, there should be more evening departures to the US. Maximise time away (you can leave after work) and much better on the body clock.

There has been late afternoon and evening departures to LAX from SYD before. MEL has an LAX flight depart after 7pm. QF3 (SYD-HNL) also departs late afternoon.

When is the flight? It could be related to upcoming 747 changes.

The change starts September 17.

Saves the plane sitting at SFO all day I guess. Good for utilisation.

QF73 has been on a mixed departure for months - I flew on QF73 scheduled departure at 5:55pm back in March.

I prefer this timing for Australia to US flights. Good schedule for enjoying an early dinner in the lounge with your favourite libation(s) then sleeping on board at your usual time.

Brekkie before arrival and you're good to go.

It's a better arrival time in the USA than first thing in the morning. I hate getting in around 6am/7am and not being able to check in to my hotel and having to push through the whole day with jet lag and very little sleep.
I think QF95 is really great timing, if you have trouble sleeping on flights. You get into LA at a time when you can check into your hotel straight away, have some dinner and an early night, then be fresh and ready to go the next morning. It's not the best for onward connections but there's still options if you're going on the western side of the USA to connect and still be in your hotel and in bed before the clock strikes midnight.

I'm flying QF95 for the first time next month (ex NTL, I usually drive to SYD). I was wondering about the meals - I assume they give you supper after take off - but do the give you lunch/dinner before landing in the US or breakfast?

Hmm, I actually don't remember now. I do remember being excited about the impending coffee but I can't remember what the meal itself was.

Last flight I had with similar timing was QF3 SYD-HNL. Supper after departure and 99% sure it was breakfast not lunch before arrival. Thought I had pics but after checking my phone I didn't take any.

Edit: Expertflyer is showing Dinner and Refreshment for the retimed QF73 in NW18 but then again it shows that for the later departing QF3 too and I'm fairly certain you get a supper after departure, although I'm happy to stand corrected on that.

Remember the differences between summer and winter times affecting things. The later departures from SYD/MEL to LAX/SFO are great when they arrive mid evening.. of course it's useless for anything but west coast connections (some late bank connections are possible) so it's mostly O&D traffic, but there's obviously enough in the (US winter) to have those later slots.

Definitely much better from an AU departure point of view.. can spend all day at work or home, evening meal then on the plane for a few hours, sleep normall type time for a bit, do work for a bit, arrive and again, be more or less in evening timezone on the west coast. Even the 1740-1400 is a pretty nice timeframe IMHO.. I think the SYD-SFO I did as the inaug left SYD around 1400 and arrived 0930 or so into SFO which was OK, but the later flights ex-AU seem better.
IMHO

I did QF95 in March and in June.

In March they had supper and breakfast available.

In June they has Supper and "Breakfast"; the latter having a couple of non breakfasty options among the others.
