Qantas 787 reviews J - Y+ and Y

I am NOT a fan of those 787 lav sensors. Yes, it's more hygenic.. but consider how cramped the micro lavs are. You sit down to do your business... move your arm the wrong way and you can set the damn flush off!!!!

not unique to the QF 789's.
 
Is the Y+ ottoman standard for all row 20 seats or only a certain few? I assume its a permanent thing and not something that got enhanced already?
If all the seats had them it sounds like a trip hazard for those climbing out.

I was upgraded to 20F on a recent MEL-PER. The ottomans appear to be for all seats in the row; above 20F this meant 2 were placed there and consequently there would not be enough room for 1 roll-aboard. Fortunately for this trip I had 1 small back pack and a slim laptop bag - they just fitted in the bin. I really don't like this PE seat - massive oversight on bulkhead locations at the very least.

No-one on this short sector used the ottomans that I saw.

Permanent leg rests are installed on ZND at the bulk head for W. ZNA/B/C will follow soon.

That just sums up the PE product. Brand new aircraft and seat and could not see the issue. Hopefully the next change is extra legroom.

The plan was always to have these, the ottoman was a temporary fix until the approval given. The preset recline position in J is also waiting for final approval.

Meanwhile the A380/747 now has approval for mattress on for take off and landing now.

Could someone who flies on an aircraft with these installed in the future grab a picture? Curious as to how comfortable they look.
The problem with PE leg rests is they don't lift high enough to offer any additional comfort. A bag, or a pile of pillows or blankets was always required to elevate legs adequately.

That looks incredibly uncomfortable. The nets in the other rows have a calf rest as well. Is there a decent foot rest that wings out from the base of the seat in the bulkhead row?
 
I flew a couple of times in J on the new 787 (per - mel - per), including the first commercial flight on the 787 that will be doing the non stop run. Didn't feel any different to being on an a330, other than the windows and the cabin being quieter :)

I wouldn't go out of my way to fly on it over an a330 unless it was same price/convenient times.

Now that the MEL-PER-LHR service is up and running, for pax departing MEL do they clear customs there or in Perth? If in Melbourne, is Perth then just another stopover where the pax get off the 'plane and into a transit lounge?

The good:

The staff were terrific. I received a WP welcome, which was as genuine as I have received. They were particularly interested (and impressed) that I was doing the double.

The IFE screens on the 787 are large and clear. The flight to PER only showed a limited selection of movies, but it must have been a glitch as there were a lot more on the flight to MEL.

I like the little storage area under the screen. It stopped me from losing my phone/headphones in the main seat pocket. The front of the main seat pocket had a couple of smaller pockets that were perfect for my water bottle and glasses case.

The bad:

The plane itself is quiet, which means the noises are more obvious. I was two rows infront of the toilets (row 42) but I could here them every time they flushed.

Lunch was served a good hour or so after we left. They apologised it was so long as they were still working out where everything was! Nothing wrong with that. The next meal was soon before we landed. So basically the timing was lunch, and then nothing substantial until breakfast. They did have a snack available in the middle of the flight, but it was just that, a snack.
The meals that were served were very plain. I would have expected them to jazz up the menu a bit for a longer flight.

The foot rest/net is just silly. I put my feet in it and they were still sitting on the floor with minimal support.

The ugly:

The seat is too narrow. Whilst I am tall, I am not particularly large. I was sitting next to someone who was also not 'oversized'. We could not sit flat against the seat back side by side as our shoulders wanted to fill the same space. I spent the entire flight sitting at a slight angle so I wasn't leaning into the aisle.

Speaking of the aisle, I was bumped continuously during the flight, even though I was within the confines of my seat. Across the aisle from me was someone who was not able to do the same, so everyone leant into me walking past.

There must be a company memo out asking all staff to promote the seat. When I told the CSM that the seats were narrow, the answer was to promote the extra leg room. The captain (Andrew) came past for a chat and I said the same thing when asked how I was enjoying the flight. The response was the same - 'but there is extra leg room'.

Verdict:

I am sorry Qantas, but the seat on the 787 is too narrow. You have made a mistake going 9 across. You would have been better off having them wider (8 across) so losing a column of 20 seats but closer together (pitch) and gaining a row of 8. So a net loss of 12 seats for a much better ride.

I flew the A380 the day before with greater width and smaller pitch. It was much more comfortable.

I won't be flying QF longhaul Y in a 787 again. I am actually not looking forward to my MEL-PER flight next month. (But I do have the F lounge to help!) And I wouldn't recommend anyone else does, either.

Sounds like it's the same as Jetstar's and Uniteds 787s. They both have the same seating in cattle class. Hard, narrow, uncomfortable.

As for the noise, the above mentioned airlines' 787s were, I felt, as noisy as any other aircraft in which I've travelled. Still needed my noise cancelling headphones and earplugs (class 5).

I'll be looking at Qantas's SYD-LHR route, which I think is still being flown on the A380 (JB can chime in here if he's reading this).

Should have flown J. This guy seems quite happy. And the video referenced in the report is worth watching too.
