I was trying to describe those uncomfortable stethoscope-like earpieces with stiff dual tubes that went into a dual hole in the armrest back in the 1970s. As a student I used to avoid the $2 rental fee by making a cone from a menu card and poking back the flap that stopped the sound from leaking.

Can't find a picture because there are too many electronic headsets that come up in an image search.

Here's one:

I am trying to remember if those QF A300's they used to fly on the golden triangle until around the turn of the century still used them. ISTR a dark blue colour.

I remember them from my childhood. TN (Australian Airlines) had them too. Actually it's a good question to ask, I always assumed I flew on their 737-300s - did the 737-400s (which transferred to QF and are nearly all gone now) ever have them?

I certainly remember them domestically and I have particular memories of them on UA flights in LOTFAP in 1995 listening to pilot chatter on channel 10, IIRC.

Used them on the JAL A300s HND-NRT in Dec 2007. Went well with a glass of Skytime.

I remember them on my first international flight - to Port Moresby, in 1985. I remember them being uncomfortable. Unfortunately I don't remember the origin airport in Australia, what airline or aircraft type it was.

Wasn't the idea you could pull your siblings headphones out of the socket and blast them when they weren't expecting it (air/noise/other)?

[;-)]

I can remember when a theatre organist would pop up through a trapdoor at the front of economy.
Ah, those were the days.

I remember when most of the a/c was First class, 4 across in a 727 and economy was a few rows 3 + 3 in the back end - bit cramped in a DC9.

And I remember when smoking was allowed in the whole cabin, later reduced to part of the cabin, and the CSM request "Please, no cigars.".... cough, cough.... Now seems hard to believe that this ever happened.

Certainly remember them from flying QF, TAA and Ansett in the 1970's and early 80's, but gone after that for flights i was on.

Me too, I used to smoke then. Also in F coffee was served from a silver pot with cream in a silver jug! Ah, luxury, luxury.
