Assuming I only travel on J/F flights earned via CC and redeemed on points. Status runs etc seem bit irrelevant?

Only advantage is extra baggage allowance?

What other advantages are there?

Well sometimes certain seats may not be available, e.g. on the QF A380 the first three rows of J are reserved for WPs.

If push comes to shove and someone has to be downgraded/off loaded then status will mean you're not first.

If your only earn is via cc, and you can do J or F flights, then I would think status IS irrelevant.

You get a better 'window' to select seats with status and you are probably a bit higher up the ladder to get an op-up (but still low if travelling on points!). In the event of a flight cancellation / disruption again, you are higher up the pecking order for getting on the next best service with status.

But I don't think you could 'status run' enough to get worthwhile status, which I think is plat on QF, and Star gold on Star Alliance.

YES kkl if you fly exclusively F/J via pts redemptions then SC's basically irrelevant - if you can continue along this path forget SC runs.

Having said that - status via CC can be adv even when flying pointy end - eg I flew J CX MEL-HKG on Mar 11 - MP Dia via Cent got me QF F Lounge access - will post report on this Sat. But overall if you can cultivate and harvest sufficient FF pts in whatever program to get you up front and satisfy your reqs - then forget chasing SC's - this of course is the HO of a very simple man - OPMWV.

I always thought that status with QF gave you access to more award flights, but aside from a WP being able to request extra award seats be released, is there actually any different between award flights avialable to NB, PS and SG?

Being located in PER, QF doesnt fly internationally anymore. Looking at SQ/CX. Only status I see attainable via CC for CX is Platinum/Cent benefits, and that needs to be qualified after the first year.

SQ no chance of PPS etc

Oh perth has lost regular qf intl flights? I hadn't heard

Off the top of my head:

much greater Award Availability
Better Seating
Bigger Luggage Allowance
When things go wrong - priority service (and better outcomes)
Bonus frequent flyer points up to 100% more!
priority reservations service (better trained operators and less queue)
Same day lounge access
Guesting others into lounges
F lounge access even when only traveling in J
F luggage tags irrespective of class traveled.

Depending on the CSM and load, may get first dibs on meals. They sometime come around to the plats first to get orders.

But overall, it's very minor stuff. Depends how much status you will accrue and how far off the next tier is.

My partner is doing a couple of status runs to find out whether QF WP1 will get her access to 2 First Class Seats out of MEL or SYD to either LAX or LHR on points. If that works I know she will be very pleased seeing she is making WP1 out of multiple long cuts to Australian cities.
2014-15 will be the year that we find out.

I'm in the status is irrelevant camp. It appears to me that earning and use points on multiply FF schemes is a bonus that no status level can trump.

Being dovetailed into one programme is restrictive.

One thing I can think of is flights within North America

Without status, even in First/ Business, you can't access Lounges :(

Even with status on certain schemes eg AA you cannot access Lounges in North America unless flying F in a 3 class domestic or connecting to an International flight.
I regard F in the US on a two class as equivalent to our domestic J class therefore my opinion that flying F trumps status is broadly speaking applicable even in those circumstances.

I've never really found it makes little more than a scrap of difference other than the mandatory greeting by a CSM, " high I'm John and if there is anything we can do....." Of course you will never see John again for the rest of the flight!
F lounges when flying J. Better seat selection ... Sometimes only.

Anyway not much more to it if you don't care about the game you have freedom to enjoy yourself!

A few flights on assorted *A carriers last year where I no longer have any status to speak of, couldn't say I noticed any difference in my overall experience. (That is, to when I had status or on airlines where I do have status)

Another benefit- guesting friends not flying the same class. Even F often do not get lounge guests.

All very minor, and so far hasn't been enough reason to chase WP. If you fly paid F/J enough you'll probably end up with status anyway :)

bit of a giggle really.. oh mr tgh congrats .. you are now gold.. (until next march when we will spin you.)
Oh that's nice thought I… but hang on what do I get ?
Well actually nothing at all worthwhile because I seldom fly domestic and always pay my way in J overseas .
It might help me get a points op up J to F on a Europe flight next march.
WP seems to be where worthwhile status starts

Having slipped from Plat -> Gold -> Silver the answer to the OP has become clearer to me. Travelling QF MNL-SYD last week in J, other pax meal orders were taken before mine (including the passenger alongside me). FA returned to me virtually last with a "sorry sir, there is only one meal choice left". I initially had 3 preferences, and it was none of those !! The meal I was left with contained rice, which is not in my diet at present. So status does count for something in J, at least with QF.
