27th February Big Qantas announcement

FWIW I would be ring QF now and getting a rerouted flight to go via East Coast if that is what you want or jump on net and see how much SQ is going to cost.

If I was travelling in economy with 3 kids, (or even travelling in economy alone), I would suck it up and take Jetstar, and not press on the east coast routing. Unless a serious/points status chaser, turning a 5 hour journey into a 13 hour+ journey (with at least 11hrs flying) just seems plain silly. If opposed to flying Jetstar, cancelling and looking at travelling SQ would be the much better option.

Does anyone know what the re-timing of QF 9/10 is?
I think this is the one good piece of news.

Perhaps QF9 may depart MEL at a similar time (as one assume no landing slots are available at LHR a couple of hours later than the current daily 0510 arrival time - but a logical move (if QF could find a slot) would be for QF10 to depart around 1215 from LHR, resulting in a MEL arrival at this time of year around 2130 + 1. This would be a markedly different offering from QF2 and may attract more travellers. I have not examined what times EK flies from LHR to DXB though, but sometimes domestically QF and JQ (or VA and TT) have virtually parallel departures from an airport.

Or they might make one of their (is it 3 daily now?) DXB-PER flights DXB-SIN-PER? Not the one that will be on the A380 of course..

How would a 777 work when a A332 doesnt? I doubt they would bother.

Of more interest in the logic department is the deferral of the 787s, given they offer 20-30% efficiency gains over an A330, if JQ arnt ready, why not mainline???????

What? I mean WTF? Really? Love it? I don't think so. It has been an unmitigated disaster. They basically open the floodgates to EK run whatever route they like at QF's expense!

Everyone has their own perspective of what works for them. For me - I do love it!

That really doesn't change much in terms of time the A380 spends sitting on the ground, just moves it to MEL instead of LHR. Another option would be to change 9/10 to the original timings of QF 29/30. Leave MEL at midnight arrive into LHR mid afternoon. And QF 10 leaves mid morning from LHR (leaving at 1015 perhaps, to facilitate onwards connections at MEL). To do this aircraft would have to cycle through QF1->QF10->QF9->QF2. Reduces the A380's needed from 6 to 5.

I agree, and with QF51 going back to an A330, I might have to contemplate a 3AM 777 flight for Singapore trips, in the meantime its a no brainer to AKL!

Isn't one problem for QF creating a 'spare A388' that apart from the LHR and LAX routes, it may struggle to consistently fill an A388 to at least 75 per cent seat utilisation at (to the airline) acceptable yields on any other route?

I like this option :D
I really loved taking QF 29/30.
Now if only they would re-route it through HKG I would be a happy little camper ;)

Hmm. So I have a 1 day turnaround Mid-May and a 2 day turnaround early June.
Seems I can go via KUL, HKG or the east coast. What are people's thoughts on best SCs, carrier and options? I'm in Y on a cheapo fare class so I'm racking my brains for th ebest way to get into J, if at all possible, including pay-at-counter in Asia.

Princess Fiona, have you talked to other passengers on QF1/2/9 or 10?

Are they by and large neutral about the rerouting through DXB, or do any chats you have had back up the AFF survey that showed a strong preference for changing these flights back to operate via SIN and so on?

I forgot about MCY and NLK again, make that 5 Australian ports served by NZ where QFi dont have a service

Both NZ and QF use a hub-n-spoke network. You have a hub (Syd or AKL), and you radiate out to your destinations from there. Unless we're saying that MCY etc. should be QF hubs, this whole comparison is pointless.

Well with the axing of the one remaining QFi flight ex-PER, I no longer have any reason to stay loyal to Qantas, as nearly all of my travel is overseas. I'd been using that QF flight to get to Singapore for connections to the rest of Asia, and to connect through to Europe. Now, due to my limited domestic travel, and zero desire to transit through Sydney/Melbourne/Brisbane when I can just catch a CX or MH flight instead, there is no logical reason to continue flying the red roo.

Sorry, but at the price point that QF charges, and the lack of services from Perth, it is no longer something I am prepared to try and justify for the sake of more QFF miles. It will be better for me to aim for a status match with another international airline servicing PER and ditch QF entirely.

I'm done.

The comparison was on the point NZ have "a smaller international network", in fact by destination thats not the case, and in fact NZ serve more Aus/NZ destinations than QFi do, let alone world network.

At least you'll still get your precious SCs when they switch you over to JQ. Too bad JQ don't give any benefits for QF status (IMO this and the baggage interline are the two worst things on Jetstar and probably cheap & easy to fix)

Qantas Frequent Flyer members with existing bookings between Perth and Singapore for travel on/after 12 May 2014, who are reaccommodated onto a Jetstar flight, will earn the same Qantas Points and Status Credits for that flight – provided the member makes no further changes to the booking (e.g. change in date, time, destination). All members must have their Qantas Frequent Flyer number listed in their booking. This will only apply to existing bookings. I don't think AFFers are a representative sample of travellers.

Economy pax with no status (the bulk of them) probably enjoy the one-stop ability to connect to many places in Europe. From SG where could you get to? FRA, HEL, LHR and CDG - anywhere else?
Business pax in J/F probably see no real change in the quality of service transitioning from QF to EK and then onwards.
The main losers are status PAX on QF in Y/PE that then get shunted to EK, where they get no real recognition. And I guess AFFers fall into that bucket.

Sure, I miss the ability to book F and PE to SG, and no more A380s. I burnt bucketloads of points flying F SIN-SYD and SIN-MEL whilst I was based there, but I can see a bigger picture here - that tying up with EK and using DBX gave QF a lot more options that persisting with SG, which isn't a OW or partner hub. Same with DFW over SFO.

You will now have to pay for your alcoholic drinks!

And the point I'm trying to make is that a "home" carrier's international ops doesn't serve a bunch of "home" ports, because they leave from a hub in the home country, and radiate out to other countries.
