I am booking award tickets for my parents to fly from UK to Sydney, but have to book from their separate accounts online to avoid fees.
If I put one flight on hold and then can't get a second seat on the same itinerary, will there be a penalty for 'cancelling' the flight that I put on hold? i.e. Is there an obligation to proceed with a booking once it is on hold?
Thanks for any advice- it's all a bit new to me.

Welcome, travellinmumberry.

There is no penalty for cancelling award tickets that are on hold. Once ticketed, however, fees apply to all but Executive Platinum.

There is no obligation to proceed with a booking on hold. One of the many benefits of AAdvantage is the ability to place an award booking on hold without issue and certainly without any fees.

The bookings on hold do have a time limit (3 days?) so they will just lapse if you do nothing - again with no penalty.

Yup the hold time is 72 hours. No need to do anything if you don't need the flights.

Although if you don't need them it's a good idea to phone and cancel the hold in the event someone is looking for the seat.
