Certain threads I know I have read all posts to the last post that was posted.

Next time when the thread appears on the "New Posts" list and I click on the thread I am taken to the beginning of the last page not the new post. This continues to occur for each new post until I get to a new page or I no longer read the thread.

It is a little frustrating when you start reading and realise you have already read the posts.

I've had this a couple of times recently as well.

Is it because some 'Likes' have been entered against posts?

Sometimes "new posts" go over to a new page and in my haste I read only to the end.

The thread shows up still in a new search and I am puzzled briefly as I thought I had just read a thread that is appearing.

On clicking I see the "new post" is number 41 or 81 or some other multiple of 40+1 (I have thread display set to 40).

This gives a similar situation to what you are describing.

I have question about threads which I have unsubscribed from. The email alerts have ceased but on my iPad these threads are shown under 'Participated threads' and continue to be updated. Is there a trick to remove such threads?

Did you participate in the thread? If so, you can't change that fact.

Of course I did. That's why email alerts were received. Then, I unsubscribed. The email alerts have ceased but it sounds from your answer that once one subscribes to a thread we're stuck with seeing all newer posts, despite the unsubscribing.

I replied to this thread earlier so should be marked as read for my user profile.

There have been new posts since and when I open thread it takes me to the top of the page. There are only 7 replies in the thread to date.

You're looking at the list of threads that you participated in. That doesn't change. However the list that you are subscribed to does change.

Okay, got that now. I would prefer rather not to see those threads I unsubscribed from. Someone may think of programming a way around that.

And the reason this happens is when you have someone on ignore and they have posted since you have last read the thread the vBulletin software must make a note of that point and keeps opening the thread at that point until you reach a new page.

It is a little confusing.

Don't know if this is what you are meaning. In the "subscribed" section, once you click on unsubscribe they will still be in that section, ok, I then go to the settings section and at the very bottom it says......clear cache. I click yes and the if go back to the "subscribed" section they no longer appear.
As a footnote, if you do another post or answer one then you will be subscribed again and you will need to re-do. Perhaps don't clear cache until you are sure that you are finished completely.

Hope this is what you were talking about
