Interesting - bonus points and ability to upgrade sale fares?

Dear xx_xx_,

Choose Thailand as your getaway these holidays and you could enjoy the journey as much as the destination.

Great Economy fares on sale now

Don't miss out. Book an eligible return Economy fare between Sydney and Bangkok for selected departures dates in 2014, starting from $799* per person. Sale ends 23 December 2013, unless sold out prior.

Use your Qantas Points to request an Upgrade

Book any eligible Economy fare and if you have enough Qantas Points, you can then request an upgrade^ and experience International Business. If you book in Business, there's more good news. Our sale fares from Sydney to Bangkok start from $3,199* per person return. Fares are available until 23 December 2013, unless sold out prior, for travel on selected dates. Plus, you'll receive up to 20,000 bonus Qantas Points~ on top of the usual Qantas Points you'll earn, including the Cabin Bonus.

confirmed can upgrade my Syd-Sin fare in January, but not in April. Although strangely, it's supposed to be 40k pts from Discount Y to J, but they are asking 50k...new Qantas enhancement to increase international upgrade pts as well?

Yeah got the same quote. It must be an error. My reading is $799 + 80K points = SYD-BKK rtn in J.

But I don't live in Sydney and don't want to fly through there. Any options for the other 85% of Australians Qantas?

Technically more than a third of Australians live in NSW, if you don't live in Sydney "..you're camping out"

seems like they are still struggling with BKK, word is probably out on the terrible 330 product

I just tried a dummy booking for March. Sale fares (which price at $799) are not upgradeable. Some fares are "eligible" to be priced at $799, while others are "eligible" for upgrades!

BTW up till Wednesday the sale fares were $749.00!

Suspect its more a yield issue...
Given Scoot just did $189/349 fares to SIN and AirAsia is often around those levels to KL with not much more to BKK, Jetstar and Qantas are way out of the ball park
