Slightly related i actually heard this beast fly over my house lastnight - around 9pm.

Surprisingly loud aircraft, not the first time i've heard it either.

No wonder she diverted to DRW if you heard her at 9PM, give she left BNE at 9.10PM her wings much have cracked from the supersonic flight

haha actually thinking about it now it was probably closer to 9:15 (North west Brisbane, 10km from CBD).

Don't get many aircraft movements this way after 6pm, not that i can usually hear anyway..... This flight always stands out but was particularly loud lastnight.

Did it depart late at all?.... hammer was down! :D

Normally leaves at 8:50, so 9.15 would be close.

I live bayside near the flight path. I've always found the A380 to be much quieter than the B744 that we get around the same time (QF8).

Medical I assume?

Yes, it was medical - I had a friend on board who posted on fb about it. Some poor fellow in a bad way apparently, but I don't know the details. He was carted off in an ambulance.

He said there was a long delay on the ground after the medevac to refuel and to allow the brakes to cool sufficiently.

I wonder if they had to do a fuel dump to be able to land in DRW

I'm told that pax were told that they did fuel-dump prior to landing. Dunno how long the runway is at DRW but I imagine an A380 fuelled for another 8-ish hrs flying would be over maximums.

Even if not, a heavier than normal landing carries a risk of damage and/or fire to brakes & wheels; the resulting potential for costs and further delays would likely outweigh the cost of a few tonnes of avgas...

Cost of Fuel is not cheap in DRW either.

I am not sure of the length but there is fair few non commercial air movements out of DRW.

Darwin is an alternative landing site for the Space shuttle (when they were opeating) so yeah... it's long enough... we regularly have antov's visit.. and not the small boys...

Imagine being in the tower when that might have happened, one of the few aircraft you cannot tell to go around!
