FYI:

As a result of a maintenance review of some of Brindabella Airlines fleet, Qantas, in accordance with usual practice will be withdrawing Qantas code from all Brindabella services until further notice.

Customers with existing bookings the flight numbers listed below, for travel between 23 November and 29 November 2013 (inclusive) will be reaccommodated onto the same flight operated by Brindabella Airlines however with an “FQ” flight number.

Flight Numbers:
SYD/MRZ – QF2921, QF2923, QF2925
MRZ/SYD – QF2922, QF2924, QF2926
BNE/TMW – QF2927, QF2929, QF2931
TMW/BNE – QF2928, QF2930, QF2932
BNE/CFS – QF2933, QF2935
CFS/BNE – QF2934, QF2936
NTL/SYD – QF2938, QF2940, QF2942
SYD/NTL – QF2937, QF2939, QF2941, QF2945
SYD/OAG – QF2947, QF2949, QF2951,
OAG/SYD – QF2948, QF2950, QF2952

Will ORC requests be accommodated?

It is funny you suspend the codeshare, yet you still fly the passengers on that airline, just with a different flight number...

What the heck does this mean? Qantas have reviewed the maintenance state of Brindabella planes, is not satisfied and is withdrawing its brand, in case there is, shall we say, 'an issue' (hopefully not in the air)?

Its CASA:

The Civil Aviation Safety Authority, or CASA, says four Brindabella aircraft have been pulled out of service temporarily because they are behind on their inspection and maintenance checks.

The regional airline, which flies the Moree route, has advised passengers of a temporary disruption.

QantasLink has been asked to assist Brindabella while a number of its planes are out of action.

CASA asks Brindabella to complete overdue engine checks - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

I'm confused - nothing new there!

CASA identify that certain aircraft have missed mandated maintenance requirements and ground those aircraft. Aircraft which *have* been correctly maintained continue to fly. This impacts Brindabella's capability to maintain a service, but where those services continue to operate, Qantas have kept the passengers on those services, just Qantas have withdrawn the code-share.

Why?

BD

They don't want to report QF passengers are deceased as a result of a crash.

I suspect it might be an insurance issue re liability?

I can understand why QF acted on the codeshares in this case because of CASA, but it makes you wonder with all the other codeshares that QF has on other airlines. Do they simply rely on the local aviation authority to act before withdrawing the codeshare? Or do QF do some of their own checks?

OW airlines are certified by a team of mechanics, legals and accountants comprising of all OW member airlines as are Skyteam and Star airlines. Depending on the internal risk analysis QF may do some of their own checks but all of their codeshare partners are pretty decent and have never required a check beyond the initial due diligence checks that takes place.

I had PX in mind.

PX is fine, you'd be surprised how much of PX is actually Aussies & Kiwis who have got jack of QF/NZ/DJ/EK/EY and wanted something a little more simple and close to home. They actually use Australian Aviation up in BNE for a lot of their training from memory.

A benefit to the QF brand is also more obvious.

Each morning this week on local radio when ABC radio talks about cancellations and delays it is reported as "Brindabella airlines", no mention of the QF codeshares.

Each morning when VA inevitably cancel one of their BNE-SYD commuter flights, it gets reported as VA, EY & SQ all cancelling flights.

Interesting point. Does anyone know whether these flights count towards the Qantas on-time performance as reported by BITRE?

Nope doesn't count. Thats why when QF claim in marketing press to be the most punctual airline in Aus they have small print pointing out this figure excludes QF Link as there on-time performance is recorded under the old sub brands e.g. Sunstate, Eastern etc etc
