AusBT is in Seattle for the delivery flight of XZJ Mendoowoorrji and they've posted an amazing photo gallery!

I must admit at first I thought this looked a bit 'blah' compared to the previous Aboriginal livery designs but the new close-up pics and the story behind this livery make it look a lot more compelling.

The report says the plane flies into Sydney on Monday & then will spend some time flying in WA.


I thought that images of dead aboriginals weren't supposed to be shown on TV or named - or is this an ABC only thing?

The artwork is not an image of a dead person.

i think 'erkpod' may be referring to images of the artist being shown on tv...not the actual artwork

Interesting reading on that link. It's a shame the ABC link on that story doesn't work.

I remember the reaction when the singer of Youthu Yindi died & what happened when he was mentioned by name/image.

I was only commenting on this last night when someone was arrested for the murder of a 16 year old indigenous person 20 years ago. No warning at all. This was on SBS and ABC.

I'm not sure the new livery is that appealing.

I have no idea if protocol was followed. I was just surprised that names and photos were shown without a warning.

I'm not sure the new livery is that appealing.

I really like it. I'm into aboriginal art and have pieces that are similar......it looks like a Rover Thomas (I know it's not) but it's got the same look and feel.

I think most people would feel underwhelmed because there's plenty of white plane. Unlike the two previous iterations of Indigenous art where there was not a bit of "blank canvas" white to be seen.

Those previous two may just have prejudiced people's views of what Indigenous art must entail and so this new livery to them may seem like nothing. Call it an ignorance of the background of the artwork but that's what people will think.

I can see (or at least appreciate) the story and subtlety behind the artwork so I'm quite happy with it. I would've liked to have seen the original artwork on flat canvas - that would give a better idea to everyone how the paint job translated to the plane.

I know QF have a prostate cancer plane which is just a blue ribbon and text; they also have Movember planes where all is done is a moustache painted on the front. We've also seen the "Go Wallabies" and a promotional livery for Australia to host the 2022 Soccer World Cup. All rather minimalist in a way, but remember there's no precedent.

I can't profess to know the stories behind the artwork because I'm not indigenous. Like most people. So I can only comment on how visually appealing it is. I think the thing I'm not sure about is the long row of dots that has been drawn simply to accommodate the nose end.

It just doesn't do it for me., it's not objectionable but as art I've enjoyed better Limited edition Coke bottles.

I don't care to know the background, I want art on an aircraft to be visual only.

As I said, this isn't objectionable, just dull.

The art on the nose flanks of Virgin aircraft is more pleasing.

Well, I'm probably in a minority of one, but I think this is plane (pun intended) fugly!!

Australian Culture 1978 certainly - it looks like it's been bitten by a shark!

Aboriginal? To my, very unintellectual mind, the colours are just nothing like I'd associate with indigenous art.
If this is intended, then I'm at a loss because it screams "bogan art" rather than "indigenous art" to me and does nothing to educate or inspire me to consider otherwise.

The previous examples, however, were universally recognized as indigenous-inspired.
