Re: 72hr visa-free transit in Beijing and Shanghai from 1/1/2013

While in Hong Kong thinking of going to Canton Fair for the day do I need a visa for Guangzhou?

Hong Kong to Guangzhou and back to Hong Kong is NOT eligible for TWOV. you need to have onward flight tickets to a third country.

i don't know if there are specialist visas (like they have for schenzen) for trade fairs and and the like? you'd need to check with the organizers of the Canton Fair.

Passengers ought to be ready to produce printed copy of itinerary or risk denial of visa.

Passengers ought to be ready to produce printed copy of itinerary or risk denial of visa.

to apply for the twov you will be asked for your onward flight within 72 hours. you may be asked for details on your accommodation.

failure to produce the onwards flight may risk denial of boarding, or denial of entry to china, but cannot lead to denial of a visa as there is no visa granted.

I know it is probably too late, but yes you would have to get a visa as you would be entering Canton I can only assume via the land boarder - only to return to Hong Kong, rather than flying in and transiting onto a third destination.
