Qantas 'surprise after the election'

I've heard rumblings that the government were looking at purchasing one of Qantas's A330s (at a discounted price) when they return from JQ and converting it to the new RAAF Prime Ministerial plane. Apparently, this discount would be in exchange for permission to setup a Jetconnect style airline in DXB to fly into Europe under the QF banner and with 787s, dedicated crew base etc
I've been saying this for ages, it is by far the most logical and intelligent step for Qantas in to the future.

Wasn't that the idea floated a few years ago, just based in Kuala Lumpur in conjunction with Malaysia Airlines? I don't think we've heard anything of that idea since...

More frequencies beyond Australia.

Not that EK is getting smaller, in fact quite the opposite, but their must be gaps, destinations they don't service that Qantas might like to service and could take up.

Can you book a QF codeshare on EK to the US currently? If not, or even if you can, with a service based there Qantas would once again be able to offer RTW through America all on their own metal. Pretty good case to choose them as an airline, not sure what it brings to EK.

Eg, distances:

SYD DXB 7491
DXB DFW 8036
DFW SYD 8589

SYD DXB 7491
DXB GIG 7392
GIG SCL 1825
SCL SYD 7053

THAT'S why BNE dom are so heavily delayed. Nothing to do with runway congestion at all!

There will be a censored version for the young ones.

Paul Howes to enter federal politics and replacing Bob Carr as a federal senator, I think this means a role change for Olivia Wirth as she may have a perceived conflict of interest in her Government Relations role for QF.

A role change for Olivia Wirth could mean some other rearrangements in QF management?

I'd be surprised if it would mean a role change for Wirth. Labor is no longer in government and even if it was, I think it might only be considered a potential issue if Howes was in the ministry.

Ummm. Kinda not.

Wirth was moved but it had nothing to with Howes becoming a senator (evidently).

The article doesn't really relate to what I had to say.

Steve Creedy feels it was related to her relationship, obviously back then there was no senator aspirations apparent but the theme is the same:

A ROMANCE with union leader Paul Howes is believed to have been a factor in Qantas's decision yesterday to strip high-profile executive Olivia Wirth of her responsibility for government relations.
