ATO (tax office) payments by credit card

I was unhappy to get stiffed for 180k of points by Citi Select Kris but looking back at the results from all the successful transactions I am a very happy person.
You just need to stay flexible and play the game well.
You can forget the idea of using Amex direct branded cards as they have nothing for us (cost is 2.9 cents per point).

Interesting note on my latest Citibank Signature Statement; issued 4/9 for period ending 3/9:

I look the liberty of underlining the "payments to the Australian Taxation Office" section.

The worrying part about that change is that if you put your card in credit by more than $10K you don't get points. What if your limit is not big enough and you want to buy a car? As I read it you don't get points if your credit your card by more than $10K. Has it always been like that?

Surely just split the payment 2, 3, maybe 4 times? If you have negotiated with the dealer to pay with a card, I doubt they'd scoff or question splitting it.

Definitely going to need some closer management of purchases. Last week I had the card in credit close to $120K and then proceeded to exceed my limit the same day no problem.

Give it the flick and get a WW EDR QANTAS CC .... 1:1

AFAIK that has always been part of their T&Cs. Dunno if they enforce it though.

Other than Westpac credit cards I haven't put any others into credit but I can see how any AFF member who doesn't read the CC updates could get hurt by the new Citi policy of going further than $10k in credit producing zero reward points.
We both have good sized limits with Citi and with ATO for Citi credit cards off it is less of an issue going forward.
Qantas points are really good for domestic business class flights but are hard to use internationally for pointy end travelling.

For those who haven't noticed, the merchant rate for MC/Visa has dropped by 0.06% to 0.42% effective 01/09/2013.

Good to see. Hopefully they'll cut Optus out of the loop completely at some point so it can go down to the 0.33% it "should" be.

That clause has always been there, and in my experience has never been enforced. Note that it has been quite a while since I've had my Select card more than $10k in credit though (at least six months), so things may have changed.

Does anyone have any experience with the ANZ Business One card? I'm getting some pressure here to do corporate cards
Two questions:
1.Is it the optimum for Business reward earn ($150 fee, 1 point per dollar, redemption 2 for 1 on QFF, SQ and Velocity)

2. Has anyone gotten points for ATO spend on this card - the Ts and Cs (relevant part reproduced below) are a bit vague, mentioning Government charges, but not specifically the ATO spend.
Thanks,
Peter

You will not earn Reward Points on interest

charges; government charges; bank fees; cash
advances (as defined in the ANZ Commercial
Cards Terms and Conditions), cash equivalent
transactions, balance transfers and Billing
Account adjustments resulting from disputed
transactions.

Just had 50,000 or so points come through from my ATO payment last month. Visa card was put into credit and then ATO payment made.

Can only get 200,000 per year but that won't be hard.

:D

The conditions on this Business One card say they don't cap the points, but I'll read further. Good to hear they work for ATO, though - kaching.

Nothing to do with your previous post. Mine was through a personal Visa card.

We returned from a holiday and the only tax bill was a mistake so it will get credited. Other than that I overpaid a family members account on a credit card a month ago on a credit card and received a cheque refund. Now that is sweet as I used a point a dollar MasterCard for the payment.

Now there's a new slant. Accidental?

BEWARE - I know of a certain 'smartie' who is now in considerable hot water because of this type of 'accident'. (No it aint me)

There was a form processing the tax reduction as we took off for our holiday so I paid the gross bill seeing we were away for 3+ weeks. A good result for points from this "accident".
Better to clear all the taxes claimed by the ATO when you are travelling overseas.
