Qantas has released new Buy Business, Get First in one direction fares to HKG. From now until 30 September 2013, when you purchase a published Business Class fare in D, C or J class, upgrade to First Class in one direction at no additional cost subject to A class availability.

This offer is valid for immediate departures until 31 January 2014.

The 'subject to availability' clause is what concerns me.

Would they give the seat to someone who offered to pay for it via FF points before the person who accepted this deal? When would it be confirmed? Can you choose which direction you get the F seat?

Notice exclusion of (I) class which is what most self funded business class travellers use!

Now here is the important thing, do you get J or F SC / Points for your F flight?

Also another drawback is that unless you're going via/ex-SYD you cannot avail this offer, as HKG from BNE and MEL are only old A330's.

and be careful to pick an A380 day and not a 747 one!

They still fly proper F cabins on 747's to HKG. I believe it's the only First class 747 service which QF has left.

unless there's been a recent refurb I thought these F cabins were best avoided

No refurb but IMO its still streets ahead of old J on Skybed Mk I
Wouldn't pay full J prices for an upgrade to it though.
I did a points upgrade earlier in the year on HKG-SYD in a 747.
It does hold a bit of nostalgic value for me as the 747 was my first ever long haul in F (SYD-LAX-JFK) :)

So I class return comes in at $6022, a combo of D and A at $6805 and A return $7563

It's 25K points for J-F, how does that stack up? My maths is hopeless, mind you I usually try and get to LHR for under $7K return ;)

My limit is $6.5k! I think the most I've ever paid for J is $6.2k to LHR. It's almost always under $6k.

Also another drawback is that unless you're going via/ex-SYD you cannot avail this offer, as HKG from BNE and MEL are only old A330's.

Old A330's? They are half the age of some of the 747's still going around!

How are you guys seeing this I cant see it on the web?
