Hi,
I just booked a flight to Tokyo (QF21/22) in September, which is operated with 747-400 planes. However, QF seems to have 4 different versions of this model with slightly different seat maps. I was now surprised to see a different seat selection seat map for QF21 and 22. Does the booking software already know which particular planes version will be used for which leg 2 months in advance, or how does this work?

The equipment intended to be used on international flights is scheduled many months in advance.

This does not stop subsequent changes or substitutions between scheduling and the actual flight occurring, although they try to avoid doing so.

The answer I got from Qantas is: NO, the booking software as well as Seat Guru or others do not/will not know ahead of time which exact seating plan will be for a fight in advance. They quoted having several (3 or more) configs on 747s.

Of course they will indicate that as they cannot guarantee it - I can assure you at any particular time after scheduling they know the configuration they intend to operate.

Its a lottery on what configuration is used.

I experienced all 4 versions.
It may seem somewhat random when booking well in advance, but several months out with international flights they have it scheduled down the the actual Aircraft registration. (I believe it's about 4 days domestically)
