I'm looking to book a flight out of Canberra on a Saturday morning in August to Brisbane. The first VA departure to BNE is VA1211 at 0850, although there are several other VA departures earlier to MEL and SYD. There are only two VA arrivals before VA1211's departure, one from MEL and one from SYD. VA1211 is an E90 as is the MEL departure, but the SYD flights are ATR72s.

Given the time of the year, and the propensity for fog to affect incoming arrivals, I was wondering if anyone knew whether VA1211 was typically on a plane that had overnighted in CBR, or if it was usually the plane that serviced in incoming flight from MEL.

If there's a good chance that VA1211 overnighted in CBR, I'm more inclined to take the chance of no fog delays departing and book it, but if not, I'll look at going to BNE the evening before.

From memory, VA1220 (BNE-CBR) brings the aircraft down to Canberra the previous afternoon and sits at CBR from around 1700 until the next morning. Having said that though, you can never be immune from something going tech in combination with the fog, so if you have the flexibility to go to BNE the night before - this might be worth doing if you have a hard deadline the next morning to save being stuck in CBR. Also remember that crews may not necessarily come from Canberra that morning and might need to be flown in on the early SYD/MEL inbounds.

I'd agree that if at all poss, dep the night before. But, maybe someone more up to date on layovers can comment. The fog has been omnipresent this week, not lifting till the pm on one day. Another day, it started clear but quickly rolled up the valley at 0800.

If you need to be somewhere important on Saturday morning , I would recommend departing night before.

Basing your travels on the possibility of a aircraft being on the ground is risky, as who knows what might happen the night before!

Also, just because the aircraft is on the ground doesn't mean the fog can't stop it. A few days at Canberra of late have been bad enough to stop departures as well as arrivals.

Yep. There are still restrictions for low-vis departures. I've been stuck in CBR until about 9am a few times in the last month on the departure of an overnighting aircraft.

Departures do have a lower minima than arrivals but its a minima regardless, so if pea soup sets in there is a fair chance nothing moves.

VA also has that dreadfully inconvenient flight from OOL which arrives at 10.45 PM. I don't think it goes anywhere after that so it may be the BNE 73H flight next morning

Thanks all. Just need to weigh up the risk vs the more expensive Friday night flight.

I need to be at Coorparoo by 1pm, so a 12 noon arrival in Brisbane would be the latest I could chance.

I think QF overnight more metal than VA in CBR as they really dominate that market. They can also recover better from inclement weather due to frequency of services. They would be a safer bet.
