I have recently been demoted from Platinum One to Platinum. My membership was reassessed on May 31 and today, the demotion has become active. Over the last three years, I have attained Platinum One through meeting the criteria in two of those three years. In my most recent year, being the third year, I attained 2,600 Qantas Status points and about 100 status points spread between AA & CX.
I fly almost exclusively in Domestic Y and this has not changed over the last three years. The only perk and almost only reason that I have flown with Qantas and enjoyed being a Platinum One, was the ability to pre select the front row in Y upon making a reservation, as opposed to having access to these rows in the immediate days before departure.
I find it bizarre that Qantas attempts to encourage additional bookings through double status points promotions and as a by-product of these promotions, members increase their frequent flyer status. Yet at the same time, Qantas does nothing to encourage those with the highest levels of status to remain in that category. My point is, that travellers who were platinum frequent flyers will have become Platinum ones only as a result of a double status point’s promotion, yet if I was offered a double status points promotion, I would have flown more than was required to meet the criteria for Platinum One membership without taking or booking an extra flight. I have flown an awful amount over the last three years, and that will only continue in the next year, it just doesn’t seem an overly effective or intelligent way to reward loyalty. It’s not as if I went from 3,600 status points to 400 and by all accounts, if i had of done that, i would still automatically be platinum. I know these double status programs are targeted but a bit of common sense wouldn’t hurt.
As a consequence of my demotion, I will be flying where possible with Virgin. Sorry Qantas!
