I have recently been demoted from Platinum One to Platinum. My membership was reassessed on May 31 and today, the demotion has become active. Over the last three years, I have attained Platinum One through meeting the criteria in two of those three years. In my most recent year, being the third year, I attained 2,600 Qantas Status points and about 100 status points spread between AA & CX.

I fly almost exclusively in Domestic Y and this has not changed over the last three years. The only perk and almost only reason that I have flown with Qantas and enjoyed being a Platinum One, was the ability to pre select the front row in Y upon making a reservation, as opposed to having access to these rows in the immediate days before departure.

I find it bizarre that Qantas attempts to encourage additional bookings through double status points promotions and as a by-product of these promotions, members increase their frequent flyer status. Yet at the same time, Qantas does nothing to encourage those with the highest levels of status to remain in that category. My point is, that travellers who were platinum frequent flyers will have become Platinum ones only as a result of a double status point’s promotion, yet if I was offered a double status points promotion, I would have flown more than was required to meet the criteria for Platinum One membership without taking or booking an extra flight. I have flown an awful amount over the last three years, and that will only continue in the next year, it just doesn’t seem an overly effective or intelligent way to reward loyalty. It’s not as if I went from 3,600 status points to 400 and by all accounts, if i had of done that, i would still automatically be platinum. I know these double status programs are targeted but a bit of common sense wouldn’t hurt.

As a consequence of my demotion, I will be flying where possible with Virgin. Sorry Qantas!

Sympathetic to the situation of not making a desired, and useful status level.

As I understand it, you have been granted P1 status once in past 3 years without actually getting there. I'd expect that perk, especially as you are doing it the hard way - domestic Y ;)

This year, you've again fallen a bit short, no DSC, and QF haven't waved the magic wand. Commiserations. But QF have apparently thought one freebie boost was enough.

But if you HAD been given a DSC, then you would have reached P1 and everything would have been sweet. Is that right?

So do you want a DSC offer or to be comped P1 again?

That totally sucks, but why would you expect to get the double status promotion? Because you were going to fall short of WP1?

Im sorry but I dont see there is an issue here. You didnt get enough SC's, only 2/3 needed. Everyones always jumping up & down about DSC, its obviously targeted.

I dont think any WP1 on this site has recieved double SC? I certainly havent. I got the double SC's just after I qualified for WP, without the double SC I still would have qualified for WP1. I don't expect to get it again, as they have already captured my loyalty. Bit like you getting comp'd WP1 the year it came out. They knew you would fly with them.

As you know WP1 is great to have, but unfortunetly it's not worth chasing unless you are very very close.

Maybe this membership year QF will notice your not flying much at all & offer you a double SC promotion to get you back

Always interesting to see a post like this from someone with a single digit post history.

I don't know how you have been P1 for 3 years, it was only launched in Nov 2011.

As a P1 in my second year, neither year has been comped or made up of double SC flights. And I also fly mostly domestic Y.

Good on you for posting.......never good to be knocked down a peg.

Pity about WP - them's the breaks.

I really haven't noticed much of a difference being platinum one compared to platinum. I think the only damage done from a downgrade is to your ego.

I fly mainly international in business class cabins. When I fly domestic it's almost always in economy except if in transit to an international location. I have always received exceptional treatment by Qantas and it's one world partners bar the odd few flights - and this has continued since becoming platinum one.

So do you want a DSC offer or to be comped P1 again?

Neither, a double status points offer is what the OP wants!
2600 QF status points and 100 AA/CX status points in the one year is clearly not enough!

It's all about the status points, baby. Nothing more and nothing less. Status points all the way.

In case you didn't get it, they are called status credits, not status points. It's not like you use the term "Australian Rupee" when you are talking about the "Australian Dollar".

Just trying to work out this post. You didn't qualify for WP1 and were demoted to WP so somehow that's Qantas's fault is it ?

The issue is in your post. Double status would not have made you book an extra flight. The whole point of double status is to make you book extra flights. Good luck with virgin, as a double platinum I might be able to share some tips. Still if you're not paying for your own flights if say you're crazy to consider virgin.

I get you, it sucks to be demoted from the top. I'm P1 since the program started in late 2011 (I don't think it exists for 3 years like you said) and I also did it the hard way flying mostly domestic in Y. I can understand you may feel a bit "robbed" for not getting the DSC to help push you to 3,600 but crossing the road to VA just because of that is not a good enough reason IMHO.
WP is still a great level to be at and you keep most of the perks you had as P1.

Regarding the seat selection problem you mentioned I would suggest to select the exit row upon booking and check again a few days before the flight to see if first row is available. Worst case scenario you will exit the plane a few minutes later but at least have more legroom for extra comfort.

I think what upintheair1987 might be getting at is that currently, Platinums are treated like Gold used to be and P1 are being treated how Platinum was pre-2005. So in this sense, dropping from P1 to Plat is the same as going from Plat to Gold. It's a psychological let down; and, if that is what drives you to fly an airline (which is the case for MANY frequent flyers), then changing to an airline where you are the top-jock again is very appealing.

I do agree it's disappointing that P1 don't get DSC offers, given that it's so freely given out.

In future, just send enough sc to QF got WP requalification and then start flying other airlines or crediting to AAnother FF program.

We are happy to get what the SC score says we qualify for rather than expect to get something we missed.
Double status credits offers are a sales incentive tool and appear to be computer generated.

Well said.

Whilst I understand how you feel & good on you for sharing I don't really empathise and your decision to drop them seems quite irrational. Would you swap back if you missed VA plat by 10sc? VA have comped loads of people with less than a quarter of SCs required but not those who miss by a slim margin so they are at least as 'unpredictable' as QF when it comes to the black art of comps/SC's and the like.

Good luck with Virgin, assuming you can access their website, their lovely white (some looking a little grey already) lounges with steaming hot dogs or fried rice await ;)

Selfishly for those who fly QF means better access to good seats and op ups given the amount of flying you do with them :)

I think his decision is great! More room in the lounges for loyal Qantas customers such as me ;)

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

:D :D :D that's so funny. Good luck being a platinum and getting treated as top jock on virgin.

Wonder how many points QF customer care will dish out if OP tells them he has psychological issues as a result of not making WP1 this year?
