Hi guys,

Can this (i.e., the thread heading) be done ?
Are Asia Miles equivalent to QFF points at a rate of 1:1 for the purposes of award redemption ?

Asia Miles - Redeem Miles > Flight Awards

The plan is to go to LAX via HKG in J for 45+70 = 115k points one way. Then do a crazy status run in the US before returning on QF direct LAX-MEL.

Is it true that award availability generally is much better with CX as opposed to QF ?
How far ahead would I have to book the flights ?
(The plan is to go in Aug 2014)

With award redemptions on CX will the flights earn SCs/points or nah ? (i.e., are they equivalent to classic award or ASAs ?)

And lastly, I notice on the above table that in J and F there are "companion ticket awards" - are these rates only available for CASH tickets or can they also be for award bookings also ? In either case, would the companion earn points/SCs ?

Thanks heaps any responses are much appreciated.

Hi Nizar,

You can certainly find CX flights using the Qantas and Partner Classic Award option. A dummy J booking for May next year requires 139,000 points from MEL $352.33. This won't earns you points or SCs.

Compare that with a QF JASA (you can't book CX metal for ASAs) which you could get as "cheaply" as 96,000 + $642.91 from MEL via SYD through 115,017 + $451.17 to 159,764 all-in, these do earn you full SCs and Points. Another major "plus" for this fare is that - for this example - it is fully refundable prior to Departure.

I'd be looking to book as soon as availability appears (353 Days for QF).

Regards,

BD

No problems with getting a Partner Classic Award to HKG on the Qantas website. I have done that a few times, although you pay more points when travelling on CX metal. Do look for those JASA fares though ;)

Asia Miles and Qantas points are not equivalent or interchangeable. That table gives the Asia Miles point redemptions. You may be able to book CX flights using QFF points, but not at those rates - you need to look at the Qantas partner award table which will cost you 65+104=169K QFF points if booking on CX. (assuming SYD-HKG and stopover. Less points possible if just a connection).

Ok that is a joke. So even through its supposed to cheaper on CX for redemptions I still get charged the full QF price because I'm booking on the Qantas website.

Seems like I need to get on Asia Miles lol.

Also it seems I cannot even book MEL-LAX via HKG from the Qantas website.
It keeps routing HKG-LAX through NRT and then NRT-LAX with AA even though there is a HKG-LAX direct flight on CX it seems there's no way to book this from the Qantas website.

Cheers.

Wasn't there another thread about this exact same subject? If you can't get a CX routing on a QF redemption, I suspect its due to CX's policies / restrictions, rather than anything else.

Think of it like different currencies. You wouldn't expect to book on the QF website and use HKD to pay a fare quoted in AUD. Each scheme has earn and burn in a relationship. You can't hope to earn "easy" cheap points then spend them instead of more expensive ones.

You should be able to get the routing via HKG if you use the multi-city option - and this will cause it to use the points rate for each sector.

Why don't you sign up to CX Asia Miles and just transfer Amex points direct to Asia Miles for the redemptions?
