My family and I have recently come back from a great holiday to Italy and the Uk. There are 6 of us so all in discount ecoomy.
The homebound legs were supposed to be FCO-AUH (Etihad ticket Alitalia metal) followed by AUH-MEL (same Etihad ticket and metal). We were then due to connect on a separate Virgin ticket MEL-SYD.
For some reason there was a problem with the (travel-agent) booking so that our boarding passes for the second flight could not be issued in Rome and our baggage could not be checked through to MEL. It seemed to be an Alitalia/Etihad booking engine interaction issue.
Needless to say we were not able to make the AUH connection. After some time at the transfer desk, Etihad looked after us very well, with overnight hotel room in Abu Dhabi, limousine transfers etc and booked us through from AUH-SYD directly at our request. We cancelled the VA flight but with no refund as Saver fare and less than 24h notice.
We ended up back in Sydney less than 9 hours after we would have done but otherwise not much worse off
However..
it does mean that I won't have completed the necessary number of segments to move to Silver prior to a work J trip to UK on Etihad in 2 weeks time (and will have lost 50SCs under family pooling unless the rerouted flight was inadvertantly given a higher fare class-they are yet to be posted).
It would be quite handy to have the extra Silver baggage allowance to bring some things back from the UK. I'll make Gold only after the J trip points have posted.
Is this worth chasing particularly as the VA flight was on a different ticket?
Thanks for any advice
