Here now.

Check in for VA71 to SYD is listed on the VA check in monitors as 3:45am. Other airport monitors show3am, so they are incorrect.

The corral has gone, but the arrival hall is the only open public are 'till 3am when the check-in hall opens.

The area I previously mentioned (to the far after exiting immigration) no longer has a 'corral', but there are signs up it will be closed at night (12-5am) from May 6th.

I am not sure that relates to the entire arrival hall or just the North end.

There are plenty of people sleeping around the area.

Checked in with no problems (moved to row 2 on the 73H as row 1 was surprising short of leg room on the way over).

I was told emigration will open 4:15am - will head up soon.

I am using the free 2 hour/200Mb wifi (CIAL).

Immigration opened 4:30am on the dot, they use Smartgate for departures as well.:D

After getting through Emigration and Security, surprise surprise there's a Duty Free walk through - head tight through on the right to find on the other side the hallway for the entrance to the AirNZ International Lounge.

Originally in row 1 both ways, for MEL-CHC, Row 2 was empty and I bailed to there before takeoff.

It seems that from Monday, the only area (that's open overnight) to crash will be the arrivals hall immediately you come out of customs.

Did the seats look like you could sleep on them? Or should I bring a blow up mattress.;)

You guys are making me jealous. I did an overnight in WLG and AKL airports last year but not CHC.

In WLG I was down in arrivals and security came around and asked what I was doing and was escorted up to departures to spend the night with a whole lot of strangers.

In AKL it was a little easier but still much the same.

Seats are generally not made for sleeping but if you are like me and get tired then it is possible to doze off sitting up or sitting and leaning forward. Not that difficult.
