The curse of having lots of points and a family of 5! Please help I've over bred!
I'm only a lowly bronze QFFI and I'm trying to book a long haul flight one year out to Europe or Canada with points and 5 seems to be the hard number to get business class tix on. 4 is no problem but 5 is near impossible. Does anyone out there have experience with booking 5 business class tix on points the same flight? Would it work if you tried to do two simultaneous bookings for 2 pax and 3 pax?
Or, would it be easier to buy economy or discount economy and try to upgrade? I've never tried to upgrade let alone 5 pax.
Thanks very much for any help anyone can give.

5 might be asking a bit much - you may need to consider splitting up and going on different days.

Do you have any QF status?

The best thing to do would be to split up your party into 2 and 3 or 2,2,1 and secure seats on the same day or within 24hours of each other if possible.
Get a subscription to Expert Flyer and set up alerts for J upgrades on all the flights you have bookings on and hold tight.
Worse case scenario you end up all flying in J and meeting up over 24hours, best case is you fly together.
If children are on the booking that increases the complexity x 100
Good Luck :)

I've booked very many award seats for 5 in F & J on a OW carrier.....on the same flight, on the same day.

The bad news is - it's always last minute, 0-3 weeks out, never ever on QF.....BA/CX are your only friends - out of Oz.......and it's always a classic award.

White knuckle flying for 5 - is the only way to fly:D

It would probably be easier to do two bookings eg one parent plus 2 kids on the first booking then the 2nd parent plus one child on the second one. Dad can travel with the two most lively kids & you can go with the quiet one. :p :p

You may have to do different dates for each booking but you can always change the flights later should award seats come up on the flight you want ie the one your other family members are on.

If you subscribe to the www.expertflyer.com website (less than USD100.00 per year) you can set a 'flight atert' for award seats eg U class on a given date SYD/LAX QF11 so it will email you if seats come up. Make sure your email is linked to your mobile so you get instant notification & can grab the seats asap before someone else does.

Personally I wouldn't bother with the points upgrade requests as you generally have to pay a higher fare just to be eligible to have the option to upgrade on points and chances are as a bronze ff the upgrade may not even eventuate particularly if travelling in high season.

Also suggest you get an award nexus subscription and try searching on there. While I have been booking a Malaysia J trip I have seen up to 9 business class seats on some flights to Europe. Just seeing 4 first class on one flight at the moment also so there is certainly availability.

Not all airlines show up on the QF online search tool so you either need to ring the call centre or use a tool like Award Nexus.

Dale.
