Hi,

I have a booking through Qantas with one segment on an AA flight, booked into O class (so no SC). I'd like to know if it's possible to pay to upgrade this to First?

No I don't think so. You could try at AA check-in but if its issued on 081 QF ticket stock I don't think they will be able to do anything with it.

Provided there is available seats, you can pay to upgrade at check in as I learnt last week

My mother was offered that option LAX - LAS but declined as it was only an hour long flight.

Dont call QF as they will ask you to call AA, who will in turn ask that you call QF.

What I would advise is to call AA on the day to see if there is anything available.

HTH!

As PF mentioned, if you're on a QF ticket they won't be able to do the upgrade. This is the annoying things about airlines! There's so many 'gotchas!' that people never see coming :(

All you can try and do is the upgrade to F at checkin, but they typically go very quick (and depending on how the flights are, you may not be able to as you have to do this through a kiosk machine at the airport itself).

What route on AA are you flying rotor? That would also assist us in advising you:)

I think practically with all their own Elites (ie Exec Plats and below) screaming for free upgrades it is next to impossible to buy First Seats on the day of travel.

Best advice is to buy QF as far as LAX and then P class (instant upgrade fares) on AA.

If A class is available (or C for a Business upgrade), then you can pay 15000 AAdvantage miles for an upgrade of up to three segments as long as it's on AA flight numbers and Metal.

However, doing that, you are supposed to get points as per the original booking class though - which would still be 0.

Thanks for the replies.

Well the AA leg is DFW-SJO. When I did a dummy booking prior to the flights being booked, it was booked into N if I recall - I don't have control over the booking process so it's just a matter of crossing fingers. FOr whatever reason the return flight did get booked into N.

They will sell seats before they do EXP upgrades on AA. I know that as I bought one once, and I was in queue at security at LAX with an EXP who happened to be on the same flight I was, and he was whinging very loudly that AA was doing so.

He obviously didn't get his upgrade, and he sort of crawled past me when boarding :)

Drewbles I think you are the exception to prove the rule if a domestic flight out of LAX.
International flights are different.Paid upgrades often happen.I have been offered them even on an 081 ticket and have seen signs on the counters at check in.Not always though. So it is a possibility on your return flight from SJO.Problem is you probably be hit by the original booking rule for points as Serfty says.

I figured that would be the case, which is why I was asking about paying for the upgrade. Certainly I wouldn't pay unless I would be guaranteed the credits.

I don't want to fly First, I just hate flying without earning SCs - I feel empty. :(
