Flew BNE-SYD on a flexi this morning rang a few days ago to use a complimentary upgrade (have 5 expiring in AUG) and nothing available, not a huge deal as 3F all good but there was noone in business, the other time I tried to use one CBR-BNE only one person in business and again nothing available. Has anyone had success with this? Between our family of 4 we have 20 and to me they seem completely useless.

That's disappointing. I had no trouble using two on what I thought would be a fairly busy MEL-SYD flight on a Friday afternoon. It was busy, but in Y - business was just us and one other passenger. Maybe it's just the times I fly but VA doesn't seem to be able to fill its J cabins as well as QF.

Unfortunately all you can do is point it out to them and vote with your wallet, or accept it and be annoyed.

Had no problem using one Syd to Perth last Monday morning. J load was 21, was even able to select my preferred seat.

Is easy enough to check first prior to booking.

Just look for those flights with business award availability.

I had no trouble last Saturday, OOL-MEL, and all other Business Class seats were full.

Are these upgrade available on the cheapest/sale tickets? I have two and was thinking of flying SYD-PER-SYD if that's the case :)

Call up ask if availability whilst flights are on screen ready to book....
Book then upgrade instantly
(did it this way pre Saber atleast)

I have done that post sabre and it works.

Post SABRE, it seems Z class rules for awards and upgrades, both domestically and internationally ... see my post #6 herein.

I had to be on that sepcific flight and booked flexi as that makes my requal so can now pool to other family. Will take that on board though next time thanks. :)

Only on flexi fares :)

I remember reading that and thinking that I'd never use the upgrade then! I've never bought a flexi-fare - problem with paying for all your own flights...

By definition award economy booking are considered "Saver" fares and are hence not upgradeable.
