Qantas Booking class differences between countries

Hi there

Just wondered if anyone knew the answer to this (although i have a feeling the answer is "because they can").

Booking flights from Melbourne to London on Qantas AU site there are currently the following option of fare class,

Sale $1180
Red e-deal $1593
Super Saver $1846
Flexi Saver $2567

To have a fare that you have the 'chance' of upgrading you would need to purchase at least a Super Saver fare which is nearly $700 more than the cheapest with no guarantee of being able to upgrade.

Booking flights from London to Melbourne of Qantas UK site
Walkabout 825 GBP
Fully Flexible 3042 GBP

Both of these are upgradeable.

So not only are flights from the UK cheaper than purchasing from its home country it also allows you to upgrade the cheapest fare.

Is this likely to change in the future as it seems very one sided? Maybe that's why i book flights from UK site when i can....

Make sure you check the actual fare bucket letter and take a screen print of the fare rules as displayed, some of those that indicate upgradable actually book into a 'deep discount' fare bucket that is normally "unupgradeable" and requesting an upgrade can be problematic.

Thanks Mod, but i can register for an upgrade on my booking through the website. Just seems that from an economy passenger perspective we are getting screwed as no matter how many points we have unless you buy an expensive fare you don't even get a chance to upgrade. Why is there such a discrepancy between the "Home" of Qantas and the UK?

This subject is brought up time and time again. Different markets different requirements. Traditionally home markets for any airline pay more than foreign markets. You can use this to your advantage by booking returns ex uk or europe if you travel there often enough.
