Hiya Folks,

Stuck at checkin, told your 8kg over. What to do?

I have been doing this for5-6 years with 100% success.

If your at the counter and they say, Im sorry your 4kg over, or 6kg over don't panic.

Follow these simple steps.

1) Quietly, say thank you. I will check the bags.
2) Do not draw any attention to yourself, at this point there is NOTHING you can do.
3) Make a note of the check in counter (DO NOT GO BACK TO THE SAME ONE)
4) Take your bags to somewhere quiet.
5) Go and get two large duty free bags from that airport. Even if you have to pay $1 each.
6) take the heaviest items out of your check in bag, put them in your two duty free bags, and put the lightest stuff from your check in into your check in bag.
7) You get one free laptop bag. use it, or buy one. YOu can get 3-4 KG in one (1/3 cost of excess baggage)
8) Re - weigh. Go to an empty checkin counter , use the scales. They won't see
9) Repack if its over again.
10) Rent / Get a trolley.
11) When you check in again, you need to store all the extra carry on bags within sight. DO NOT TAKE TO COUNTER IF YOU ARE AT RISK OF THEM WEIGHING THE CARRY ON
12) Check in bags which are 0.90KG or less over.
13) If you get asked about all the carry on, bluff your way. Say you've got two people's stuff. Try and hide behind your back.
14) They generally will pass duty free bags.

I have trouble using half of my luggage allowance.

Or you could just do what I had to do once (this was an overweight carry-on) and simply stand in front of the guy at the scales and out on 6 layers of clothing on top of each other. I tell you, I was sweating by the time I got to the lounge ;)

I was told by OS (Austrian) that they can turn a blind eye on anything within 5kgs of the posted limit. Anything over, and the computer won't let them check it in unless you pay for the excess... ;)

Thanks for sharing, me and my wife are xx_xx_x ourselves laughing about this...

I find your MO quite strange bordering on sneaky/sly & subsequently, I despise people boarding with 'excess" quantities of luggage that should by rights have been checked in.
Personally, I don't have any issue as usually have 40kgs+ limit & am if required; simply just pay for any excess as (rarely) required.
I don't & will never resort to wasting my time attempting to 'bluff" the check in staff & limiting the revenue stream of an airline & more importantly possibly impeding the respectable passengers space & safety with your excess quantities of carry on.
One day - It just may not fall in your favour for obvious reasons.

i think the first word in the subject is appropriate.

One of my pet hates is the copious amounts of carryon that some inconsiderate passengers bring on board. Should be 1 person 1 Bag just like Ryanair for example....

I think the OP would be at home flying in China. No need for the elaborate charade, just take ALL of your luggage on as carry-on. Never seems to be questioned there.

rather than Help,it should have been ,I am a tight a*** ,baggage limits are put in place to prevent punters taking the kitchen sink with them, yes we hate paying the excess BUT if you have SO much luggage you are 8kg over then you need to rethink your packing process in the first place !
personally I am with other FF ,I cant stand punters like this and they are obvioulsy not true FF but one off deep discount travellers

This is about as useful advice as suggesting you dress smartly and ask politely for an upgrade.

Personally not quite so keen to criticise, particularly those who are keen to trumpet they don't have this problems as below.

We all go through various stages of life, I can certainly remember a fair few examples when I was younger (and more relevantly poorer) where I nonchalantly had a bag with 6 bottles of wine in over my shoulder (that was the good old days, taking wine in cabin baggage!!) pretending it wasn't heavy. Wearing all my heavy gear, tick, have done that. Suit bag as well as cabin bag (or laptop bag), done each of these.

Sure it's not what I do now but I'm not about to start looking down my nose at those "one off deep discount travellers" as some are so keen to do here. Your prejudices are showing and prejudice is never very attractive.

If that was the advice proffered I would agree. What they are suggesting is hiding bags out of sight so they wont get challenged.

this site has been set up for FF ,hence the name of the site,in order to most benefit from accumulated points , tweak travel connections and any little "secrets" people have regarding lounges etc ,it has NOT been set up so people can post how to sneakily by pass rules and regulations ,I stare down my nose at your accusation that I stare down my nose ,as i too was once a deep discount traveller(where I obeyed the rules) before my job involved excess travel ..

Us skiers & snowboarders always have to be cautious with checked luggage (when taking our own gear).
But better on a plane than a train.

I think I know to a couple of kilo what my check in bag weighs without putting it on the scales so I'm seldom caught.
Once years ago, when you could get away with a bit of excess, I was building a house in Asia and had my bag loaded with heavy tools and some fasteners I couldn't buy locally and the scales swung around to a massive 38kg.
This was Singapore airlines and the girl told me to go away and "lose" 6 kg as the baggage handlers refused to touch anything over 32 kg.
I did as the OP suggests and moved stuff, mainly books, into my carry on bag and laptop.

It was only the once and I plead desperation but SAL did tip me the wink, an advantage of being a very frequent flier.

You're really not a very nice person. The fact that you go to such measures, and you tell others about it says a lot about you.
There are rules in place for safety and economic reasons. Flying should be a wonderful, enjoyable experience but people like you spoil it for the rest of us.

I am astounded the lengths you go to. Personally I couldnt be bothered with such antics. I seriously think you have to look at your packing.
There is a reason why these restrictions are placed and antics like this dont help when there is a struggle to find overhead space on board the plane.
This is not a serious FF'er but more of a deep discount traveller.

I'm interested as to how you as a 2 times poster feel you speak on behalf of all AFF'rs, I think there is a pretty wide range of users on the site and frequent is after all a relative terrm. For some who have traditionally not travelled much at all twice a year may be "frequent". The site in the past has always been pretty inclusive in my opinion of the range of posters.

Did laugh at the "I stare down my nose at your accusation that I stare down my nose" comment though, love it!

in Australia, Aren't Duty free bags sealed before you enter Security?

I don't know, i dont bother with Duty free anymore.
