Seen as though there are some people here who I would say have, well, a slightly biased attitude to all things Qantas, would be interested to see how many people on this site admit to actually having an interest.

Hope this poll is okay with the poll police. :)

Poll is anonymous so you can be honest. Yeah right.

What kind of option is this? It doesn't even make sense:

I have do not have friends or family employed by Qantas

Yawn... Another worthless poll.. As I have said in the past, you can't seem to accept people have different views on the airline as you do.. Time for you to grow up and learn to accept it.

For the record Mal Ware I have the same number of shares in Qantas as i do in Virgin...

It is absolutely none of your business. You accuse people here of lying and all sorts of other foul deeds. Yet you get on here and start this poll. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black. Why don't you worry about yourself instead of worrying about what other people do?

Tell us about your motivations. How many shares do you own in Virgin and Singapore airlines?

I've got shares in Alliance*. Does that count?

* not that they have aircraft ;).

I don't have shares. I don't work for them. Family don't work for them. I don't work in the travel industry.

However I think of many AFF members as my friends (shock horror to some to have friends here I know)... so I had to answer yes to having a friend working for Qantas... but if you cared about the community, so would you.

Edit: I hope this post conforms to the rules, but if not, give permission for it to be altered to reflect I have friends on this site, who work for Qantas, I met them here, not the other way around. Probably have friends here who work for Virgin Australia too...

The old how dare they have a different opinion to me - they must work for the airline.

You are not the first one to suggest it and you won't be the last.

I have to ask, what relevance does this have to peoples opinions?

Surely this is a to stir the pot?

Holding shares is a business/financial matter, which should remain confidential

Personally I hold shares in many companies, not due to the fact I like them, but where I see
a return to my investment.

I 'have' held shares in the past for VAH, yet rarely fly with them. It was an opportunity buy and had
no bearing on my preference to remain flying with Qantas… and as it turned out a buy price of sub 30c
and sell price of plus 48c it turned out to be a good move.

Now if only I had a bundle of Apple shares ;-)

Just after I voted that I don't have any connection, I remembered that my dad's cousin is a pilot with QF (I think he is a 737 pilot from memory). That said I have never met the guy in my life, so hardly something that's going to influence my decision.

Also my super fund may have QF shares, I'm not 100% sure as I leave it up to my financial planner to move my super around as required (although again something I am going to change because I'm not getting overly great returns and I don't accept their explanation).

So my love of all things QF probably has a lot to do with my grandparents, my grandfather was a very frequent flyer back in the 80's (he would have been P1 multiple times over had such things existed back in the mid 80's), and it was almost always QF I saw him fly on. Furthermore my Nana was a TA back then, and always had QF brochures sitting around their house showing all sorts of far away places. (They where also the ones who took me on my first OS trip, however it was not with QF and I was most disappointed about that fact)

I still remember my first QF flight when I was 12, and I remember how excited I was to be flying (and how excited I was to be on the red roo) and that excitement has stuck with me since then.

So no, I don't have any financial connection to the company, but I do have fond childhood memories of the company, and yes that does strongly influence my decisions.

I have a cousin that works for QFi.

No we don't see each other very often at all.

Last time i saw he the only question I asked was where are you going to next and she said Jburg. She is a senior FA on 747's.

I know a few people who work for VA and one of them i talk to every week as there son is in the same swimming class as my daughter.

We don't talk about VA.

They recently had a 12% drop in one day after the release of their earnings for last year.... :P

Oh yes… I know that, I am more referring to when the shares were first issued and barely worth the paper stock they were written on.

Like Tim Cook has recently stated… Only Oil Companies are doing better in regards to valuation etc

That would've been a massive gold mine...

One of the joys of having a SMSF is that I know I don't have Qantas shares. Used to have MaP shares though. Does that count?

I cannot see the value of the poll. It is way too narrow to be of much use.

I have quite a few friends who are pilots with Qantas and yes it does affect my thoughts on the company. The thing is that sometimes it makes me have more positive thoughts about Qantas and other times it makes me have more negative thoughts about them. Overall it probably has no real bearing as it is probably less than 1 in 50 flights that I know the bus driver and even when I do it has no direct bearing on the individual flight as they are busy doing their job.

Over the years I have had a lot to do with training pilots and believe that within Oz the standards are generally pretty good. I have no qualms about flying with any reasonable sized carrier and many smaller ones in Oz.

I don't think the fact that you own Qantas shares makes you biased in the company's favour; I think those with financial interests can be highly critical of companies as they're unhappy with performance and want higher prices. I can absolutely say that when I held Pasminco shares, I was not Pasminco's best advocate!

And as for employees being disposed in favour of the company, the last two years of industrial unrest would tell us anything but. QF employees were among the most vociferous critics of the company.

If you're trying to assess disposition towards QF by these metrics, this poll is very deeply flawed IMHO.

I have to ask, what relevance does this have to peoples opinions?
It could potentially have a lot of relevance to peoples opinions. Anyone with a vested interest is going to try and paint a rosy picture of something that is being discussed and that is clearly the case here often.

Surely this is a to stir the pot?
Nope, it is relevant.

No one is forced to vote or comment on the pole.;)

Like everyone with shares, you want a good ROI. But once you do own shares in a company, it is in your interest for as many people as possible to "like them" and the business.

I cannot see the value of the poll. It is way too narrow to be of much use.
The value of the poll is to see what ratio of posters here have an interest in Qantas, the other value would be to generate discussion on this forum. ;)
Not sure what you mean by Narrow?

I have two extended family members that work for Qantas. But they probably bag them more than I do haha. Difference is that I can separate Qantas as an employer of my relations and look at them as a customer and what service they provide me.

I personally would love to see Qantas excel, their share price rise (I don't own Qantas shares), their fleet improve and of course their service. But more often than not this is not the case, but to talk about it seems to be a touchy subject at times.

It seems any poll is deeply flawed that I create according to the poll police here.

Maybe I should create a poll about what is needed in a good poll?

I'd say by the majority of the forum.. perhaps it is you that is in the small minority that think your polls aren't flawed?

It's actually quite simple to create a good poll. make sure it's a relevant topic and it isn't loaded or biased!
