Hello,

Having just hit Gold I was disappointed to learn I have to get another 1000SC to hit Platinum. Is this the norm? I thought I would just have to get another 500 within 6 months, as it only took 6 months from Silver to Gold.

I'm a miner and fly Brisbane - Mackay - Brisbane every 6 days with 10SC per flight. When I first got this job I would always seek out the cheapest carrier, but after seeing the relaxed faces of my work mates exiting the lounge on departure and arrival plus priority checkin at Brisbane (one morning I waited 45min in normal que) I decided to stick with Virgin. It took me just over 6 months to go from Silver to Gold now everything has been reset and I have 12 months to get 1000SC is this how it's meant to work?

i would have thought that as long as I get 1000SC within a 12 month period that I would qualify.

Am I being ripped off or is this normal, or has the new booking system stuffed up?

It's a stuff up in the new booking system. It's definitely 1000 in 12 months.

Here's the text off the Velocity site:

Your Status Credit balance is calculated daily based on the number of Status Credits earned in the previous 12 months. Every Status Credit you earn is valid for 12 months, which means your Status Credit balance will not be reset to zero at your review date.

There is ONE circumstance where it takes 1,000 SC's to get to Platinum. If you get Gold fast-tracked via the Pilot program, and don't have any SC's already, it takes 1,000 SC to get to Platinum.

When you attained gold, your status review date reset to the date 12 months from when you you upgraded. This means you have 12 months to earn 400 SCs to retain gold.

Status credits themselves, are on a 12 month rolling period which means each SC will drop off 12 months after it was earned, regardless of review date.

Log onto your Velocity account and look at the "Upgrade to Platinum" box (or at the top right hand corner) where your status credit balance is displayed. Yours should be registering something over 500 (unless you've recently had some drop off from a year ago). In that same "upgrade to Platinum box", it also mentions a statement that simply states you need 1000 SCs to achieve platinum. This is NOT the amount you still need to achieve. You still need to achieve (at any point in time until you qualify as plat) 1000 minus your status credit balance, remembering that as you earn more, some may also dropping off the other end from 12 months ago so the idea is you need to earn more than what's dropping off to eventually get platinum (no time frame stipulated, but to retain gold, you need to get at least another 400 within the 12 months from the date you earned gold and that is displayed in the box "Maintain Gold").

You can make platinum, but it will depend on annaul leave, RDOs, sick leave etc when you may not be flying. You need to make 50 return BNE-MKY on Saver fares. If you're marginally short of plat. qual. you may wish to book a couple of sectors as paid flexi to boost the SC earn a bit, or even use some points on reward seats (which earn SCs for a limited time to June this year IIRC).

I'm actually interested in how things will work out with my Pilot Gold.
I got Pilot Gold Oct 24th and achieved the 80SCs to maintain by Nov 5th. I've racked up 270SCs since Oct 24th and my review date is Jan 24th.

I'm wondering what will happen on Jan 24th? Will I attain 'proper' Gold status? Will I need to get 400 SCs to maintain Gold after Jan 24th or just 130 before Oct 24th?
I'm actually aiming to get Plat if I possibly can and I'll be burning some points on SC Rewards to this end plus a long haul late in the year should see me over the line. So I guess if that plan works out then it doesn't really matter either way... still curious though.

T&Cs state that if you have 80 SCs and one sector at the end of the 3 month period, you get 'genuine gold' and your review date is set twelve months hence.

So you will need to earn 400 SCs between 24 Jan 2013 and 24 Jan 2014 to keep Gold. The last 190 SCs you earnt are effectively "lost" as far as qualifying for Gold is concerned (although they will of course be able to contribute to getting platinum).

19.12.10 Members will maintain Gold Membership for a further 12 month period following the Pilot Gold Review Date if they meet the criteria set out in clause 19.12.11 of these Terms and Conditions. The Member’s Review Date will then be set to 12 months following the Pilot Gold Review Date.

hehe as soon as I actually thought about it writing the above post I kinda thought that's how it'd pan out. Best bet is clearly to shoot for Plat then. No point getting to 770 and not shooting for the WP!
