Noted quite a few extra flights to BKK recently, it does make you wonder if Qantas has underestimated the popularity of the place, it will be interesting post EK if any extra capacity is put on.

With QF poking the middle finger BAs ways.....hopefully, they will bring back BA9/10. Wishful thinking I know.

Where there is hope, there is easy F & J award seats:D I miss these flights:(

Flew back on 5th January with them on a horrid A330. Plane was completely full. Entertainment system rubbush. Had booked an exit seat on the scheduled (at the time) 747 prior to them switching. Was not honoured.

Now to commence the battle of getting the fee refunded.........

To me the only thing good about the deal with EK is that Ill be able to finish using my QF points on EK metal and be done with them!!

I think they have underestimated the popularity of a lot of Intl destinations! particularly ones they have never served or used to serve ;)

But isn't the master plan still to hive all of these off to JQ and now EK?

To be honest I quite like the intl A330-300's I have flown them both in Y & J quite a number of times on 5.5 hour flight (on the old SIN-BOM route mainly) much prefer the 2-4-2 config in Y any day of the week! and J was quite comfortable and cabin was small enough to feel private.

I suspect there is a decent amount of traffic to Bangkok, however unlike Singapore it is mostly leisure focused, thus difficult to fill the front cabins with paying customers rather than upgraders.

Since the change we have flown in both directions on QF23/24.J cabin is full and I suspect there are quite a few retired couples on Circle Asia or DONEs that are at least paying something to be in J.
However I am not too worried with the airbus J cabin.I sleep pretty easily now.

QF has a sale to BKK for $888 ex MEL in Y. However if you were to lets say look at one of those Irish sites you could buy a tickets ~$680 ex MEL.

ive noticed the 'extra' flights as well..maybe 'committing' a 744 daily is less 'economical' than an a330 daily with a few a330 extras thrown in when required!!...i like the a330 layout.. no middle of the middle 'E' J/C seats that many here disapprove of..and 2-4-2 Y/C provides a 'less crowded' atmosphere for passengers...IFE is more reliable than 'original/unrefurb' 744..BUT drawback is no P/E available..which i think would be quite popular on the 9hr flight..unfortunately MEL/BKK has been JET*ized so might be 'waiting waiting waiting' for QF metal to appear on that route ;)

Fri night BKK-SYD had both QF24 and 62. QF23 over was full, no UG chances, but I was able to get the three of us into J. Lady next to me's partner could not get an UG (SG, she was on paid J fare).
There were a total of 7 or 8 kids in J (under 14). I think most of them were paid J, but only guessing.

It is pretty much impossible to get 1 let alone 2xJ reward seats into or out of BKK on QF now. So imo there is a decent level of J class demand there despite the coughpy A330 product. Much prefer CX J with its Cirrus Business Class via HKG (not to mention, plenty of award space!)

Does Qantas underestimate things?

There is a huge difference between 5.5 hours and 9.5 hours in an A330.

I have done HKG-PER and HKG-BNE in an A330 exit row and the flight is way too long. I will happily do SIN-PER though without too much worry.

Forget the numbers argument, but isn't 9.5 hrs in economy too much no matter what the equipment is?

PER-HKG in a 330 isn't that bad. It could be much worse. Looking at seating arrangements, I find 2-4-2 and 2-2-2 much more palatable than 3-4-3 and 2-3-2. Wouldn't most people (unless travelling as part of a group of 3 or 4)?

From the point of if its big enough to do the BKK run, I'm not a bean counter so I don't have an answer for you.

I tried getting P1 to open up a J seat on this route (had confirmed J revenue ticket for myself) with no luck over a few dates. Via SIN was no problem although QF wants to put award tickets onto J* BKK-SIN, which means paying extra to get onto CX.

Must be profitable for QF if planes are always full ! :)

Part of the problem that Qantas has is the cost of its cabin crew, a lot of flights can be profitable on Jetstar but not on Qantas international so unless there is enough passengers paying the J fare it is very hard for Qantas to make money with everyone wanting to pay sub $800.00 fares return to Asia.
