Is it possible to do PER-xMEL-HKG for 25k in Y or do I have to fly PER-HKG (or even PER-xSIN-HKG)? There seems to be varied results from a couple of posts in this thread.

Hmmmm.

But, QF67 isn't a daily service and the AA booking tool doesn't show CX availability.

Ideally, I'd like to go via MEL or SYD for the obvious oneworld Emerald benefits.

I suspect that the days that CX has two services PER-HKG there would (almost always) be availability and probably better than PER-SIN on QF. Since QF will (gladly?) sell HKG-SIN-PER (but not the other way around) if there were no award availability on direct flights, AA would consider the SIN routing. Whether MEL or SYD would be considered is really a question for the EXP desk. Even though QF will offer both $$ and award tickets, they do charge more if the eastern routing is selected. The answer to the routing question on PER-TYO/PEK would be equally interesting.

What calculator does AAdvantage use to calculate miles flown when crediting to AA? I have not credited any flight to AA as of yet...

Might be trivial, but eg SYD-LAX is 7488 miles on CGM, 7502 on MM and 7491 on the QFF earning calculator. On searching AA.com for revenue fares it doesn't show (in either direction) flight miles in the booking engine probably because it is a non-AA metal flight. On AA-metal flights it does.

Very tempted to use some of my miles on a one way trip next year.

Part of me thinks do it while you can, as the availability isn't always guaranteed nor is the burn rate and anything can happen between now and when AA emerges out of Chapter 11 (in terms of mergers & effect on aadvantage, etc).

The other part thinks to hold off and save the miles for a time when I might be able to go for longer, or enjoy it more...

Edit: Just a thought, I know if you cancel a ticket one is up for a $150 mile re-issuance fee - would one get a refund of the taxes paid on the redemption?

Yes. In fact even if you change the routing and there is no fee, you still get a refund on the taxes difference.

Downside is you also pay extra if it goes the other way ;)

Has anyone ever used the Mileage Multiplier?
Looks like there is no limit on these miles, compared to the buy/gift/shareAAmiles features.
However you do need to have your AAdvantage number in at the time of booking - for those of us with QF WP is it possible to have that in at time of booking so we can get OWE seat selection, then change at check-in to get the mileage multiplier bonus miles?

Apparently no, it's not possible. The award (and assume all awards) has a maximum permitted mileage and from memory this one is 4500 miles. To do the above would require two awards.

On a similar note, I was looking at options for PER-BKK. The AA booking engine returns PER-SYD-BKK for 25k/35k which is obviously a lot greater distance than PER-BKK. Of course, there's no direct oneworld route with the latter.

So anyway, maximum permitted mileage needs to be adhered to.

I'm now looking to see if PER-SYD-HKG-BKK will classify as one award.

I've booked a QF FASA MEL-LHR for May this year.
Can I use this flight for the AA Platinum challenge? It should earn over the 10k miles required?

If it was book at classic award rates, then no - as P class is not an eligible booking class on QF for AAdvantage earn.

thanks serfty, yes, although it was a FASA it was at the lower classic rate and is booked in P. should be fun, ive never done QF First in the A380 before... also will be interesting to see the Emirates First lounge in Dubai too.

If I join AA can I do the Plat challenge later, or do you have to do it when you first join?

I think you are correct and milesAAver only comes from those buckets, AAnytime F seems to book into F but without the earning capacity.
Unlike QF though IME AAnytime is not always available even if revenue fares are being sold
