Lucky on the ground and not up in the air... Wonder if they will all be grounded???

According to the on-line media reporting this event (yeah, I know ....), the problem was with a battery associated with the APU that "is only used on the ground". Whether that is an accurate assessment is yet to be confirmed.

Re: JAL Dreamliner fire

Yeah, as long as what started to overheat on the ground didn't break out once it had taken off, but if it had to happen when it was pretty empty and on the ground was the best time...

So you're saying they should all be told to keep circling until a fix can be found? :p

Re: JAL Dreamliner fire

Nothing consistent yet re issues with the Dreamliner, and its somewhat early to be making calls re actual causes, in the meantime folks keep ordering!

Re: JAL Dreamliner fire

I think there is a better known problem relating to running out of fuel, so landing that sucker would be high on my priorities.... :)

Have you read QF32? Their priority was working out what went wrong and understanding landing dynamics before putting NB back on the ground.

I believe OP was remarking on the relatively recent finding that some fuel couplings were incorrectly assembled leading to fuel leaks, which could then lead to a loss of power or fire. The ground might seem safer, so long as the battery doesn't catch alight when you get there ;)

I was replying to Samh004s comment about suggesting they keep circling until a fix could be found (to what i assumed he was alluding to the battery catching on fire issue) Which seeing it could most likely take months would probably result in every plane circling crashing into the ground after running out of fuel...

So landing seemed the better of the two options and they could do that in an ordely or disorderly fashion (if fire seem imminent) as the pilots saw fit...

Re: JAL Dreamliner fire

Scaredeycat and family will be aboard JL719 from NRT to SIN on Saturday ie a Dreamliner. May live up to my name - pass the Valium.
Wish us luck!

Re: JAL Dreamliner fire

A bit OT .. but I was transfixed by QF32 which was a much appreciated xmas present.
Couldn't put it down and might even read it again....what an amazing story.

Same just finished it.

really appreciated RDC candid account of PTS.

how lucky we're they to have the crew they did.

i had forgotten they suffered an engine failure on their flight home as well!

Re: JAL Dreamliner fire

Now if this was an airbus then their would be no end of people condeming it. Strange how quiet this post has been in comparison to A380 issues when they first started flying :D

Re: JAL Dreamliner fire

These things happen, I guess.
