Redeemed KF points on domestic Virgin Aust - but Taxes?

Hi All,
Just redeemed for the first time a Partner Award on VA as I wanted a MEL-CNS flight to match my "free" Amex Virgin Ticket...and the dates I wanted to fly were not in any sale period.

This redemption is quite reasonable value at 10K points each way. Long haul J is better, but I have ample points at present.

Odd thing though was that on booking, that the ticket agent stated that I may be charged airport taxes on check in.

I have booked a wide range of redemptions via KF including Thai, SAA, Egypt Air and was always charged taxes when I booked.

Is this a peculiarity for VA Partners Awards?

Have others had the same experience, and if so on check in did you end up paying any taxes?

I can only speak for booking EY numerous times with VA partner rewards and have never been charged taxes on check in, only when buying the reward ticket (and the taxes were very minimal)

Sometimes the advice from call centre agents is generic and not in context for the country of travel.

When I was travelling in Philippines in 2012 on some SQ award tix even though I had paid the taxes at time of redemption I was still required to pay an airport departure tax at the airport. In this case, the CSO was correct.

With that prompt, yes I think that I too have had to on occasion pay a "departure tax" on an Award ticket. Probably a decade ago on Y redemptions on Qantas or even Ansett before that.

So perhaps in this case, as long as Qld does not depart the Federation before next May, I may not have to pay any extra taxes....
