Hello
We are interested in visiting friends in Taiwan mid February and would like to know if anyone has suggestions for the best airline to use from the East Coast of Australia - either Syd, Melb or Brisbane please?
Thanks, Trish

Cathay without a doubt if it comes to comfort and frequency of flights, depending on how your budget is and how often you hear to Asia, its worth looking at a one way to TPE (using points or LCCs )then snagging a return J fare for around $2100 back home to Australia, this gives you a good haul of points and status credits and a return leg back to TPE for little more than what Y costs. CX also offer day flight options back, which is priceless IMHO (I consider a late PM arrival a day flight). CNY is Feb 10 next year, so leave travel to a few days after than if you can when prices revert to normal.

Any of the main airlines are ok, but if you want to save money then you can use the LCC. My friends are doing that in Jan/Feb next year and saving nearly 40-50%. Flying around Feb you may find that its not the cheapest time, and also may find hotel and tour cost higher
Also cost and time will depend if you want a stopover in HK, Sing or KL or want to fly direct.

And finally I found if my flight to Tw arrived late nite in Tw then hotel near airport saves having to travel another hr to the city.
And at the airport there I always got myself a local sim so easy to call my friends or text that I arrived.

EVA & China Airlines fly direct from Brisbane, China Airlines also direct from Sydney - if you aren't playing the points and status game/want a non-stop itinerary either carrier would be fine.

(China Airlines did have a poor reputation for safety up until about a decade ago when they overhauled their pilot program and training systems, I would have no problem flying them today).

trishsmith may well be travelling there because it is Chinese New Year, although no specific mention is made of that, and will have to pay the seasonal going rate as a result.

JohnK is quite knowledgeable on travel to/from TPE, isn't he?

Except for the fact both there and back is an overnight redeye and not a daily service.

This is the best idea.

If you use a Taiwan-based travel agent you can also get CX F TPE-HKG and QF F HKG-SYD on A380 for about $4,000.

I have done countless ex TPE bookings, but I've never come across something like this. Can you please tell me a little more?

Thankyou for all your suggestions -to clarify we are not going for CNY and will be leaving Taiwan to head for Scotland, so am only looking for a one way flight. I realise they are unusual combinations for flying - oh and from Scotland to Canary Islands just to throw this into the mix, and then home to Australia. If anyone else is inclined to play with these connections it would certainly give me some other options.

Direct is Direct regardless, not everyone has the time or inclination to connect through timbuctoo and kalamazoo :)

Why not give Eva Air a crack from Brisbane, if only for the novelty factor?

I would love to check out TPE one day and if possible fly with Eva.

Haven't flown Eva but they have a good reputation. Would be a decent option to consider.

Been there done that and wont do it again, and that was when they had a day flight in one direction, not the current red eye both ways yuck. On the other hand, love Taiwan, will be there in a month again, its very much undiscovered when it comes to tourism, which is both a plus and a negative, and the food is very good.

Does the a/c stay in BNE all day? How do they have two red-eyes?
