Bangkok Duty Free Alcohol - No soup for you!

Probably been covered before, but I'm at BKK now waiting for QF24. I had a memory for some reason that BKK had a liquid delivery to the gate option... Seems not!

Another one to add to the list of Australian duty free casualties. Painful to have to spent $100 at SYD on something I could have gotten for $50 here. Was also a bit painful explaining I'm throwing out half a carton of smokes to comply with the new allowance there! (although they gave in eventually).

Has it always been like this? Perhaps my memory is failing me.

I tried to buy duty free alcohol at BKK in January this year, no go. HKG was the same when I went early last year. Had more success at DPS & JNB though!

Re alcohol: It's been that way in BKK for years, BKK (airport/airline/DF store) will not deliver, as required by Australian LAG rules, to the gate. The cigarettes are new: introduced by Australian Customs on September 1, 2012.

Bangkok duty free has been like that for a while but that does not stop you from taking a bottle on the way in and then putting it in your checked baggage. I know that is not quite getting the limit back into Australia but better than nothing.

The tobacco and cigarettes is one that drives me batty. The government has introduced new legislation yet duty free shops in Australia still sell with the old packaging even though it is way over the limit.

Just wanted to drag this thread out to ask why in the world you can bring in Duty Free from NZ and the US but found the answer in yet another thread- some weird exception to the rule. Not surprised people get confused if it's all so inconsistent! :shock:

Same thing happened to me a year ago, leaving from coughet to Mel via Singapore, the grog was in relation to the maximum 100mL(?) liquid allowed on board. Wasn't happy, but did a google when I got home and found out. The guy at the duty free shop (coughet), though friendly, wasn't too forthcoming with information why, but from what I read you can buy duty free if you can get it into your checked luggage.
