I don't get it. These earbuds/headphones are supposed to project sound INTO the ear and (sometime vacant) head. So how is it that the headphones of the person next to me can be so loud that I can still hear it over the coughpy airline headphones I had on? How loud must it be in the direct path of such sound and fury? I had this on a flight a while ago and had to keep turning up my headphones to block it out. I didn't even have headphones on originally as I was reading a book. It was my only form of defence.

Yesterday on my flight I was reading again (no IFE on a TSV-SYD DJ flight) and for the whole flight I could clearly hear that annoying level of tinny sound coming from somewhere. Discovered it was the dude in the seat behind me. How loud must that be? And why don't these stupidly expensive looking headphones direct the sound where it's needed most?

Don't want to sound like a whinger (but I probably do) but I can't understand it. I guess you get the same phenomenon on trains and buses where the background noise is even louder than on a plane. I can only think these things are actually designed to project the tinny sound so you know how cool the person with the headphones is.

Add it to the list of things that airline travellers can complain about.:p

Idiots.

I wouldn't expect expensive headphones to give off the tinny noise externally - good (and by good I don't mean ultra expensive) headphones should be in the ear. Generally it is people using apple headphones (I can't opine on ear pods) that dont sit snugly in the ear that I find give off the tinny noise.

I haven't suffered it much on aircraft but almost daily on the train :(

I shudder to think at the number of people with severe hearing loss who will be seeking Medicare support in 20 years due to loud in ear headphones.

Some of the cheap headphones are actually designed (for some stupid reason) to direct some of the sound outside of the person's ears. I still don't understand why this is. Some earphone companies say it adds to the sound effect or something.

I once had a pair that was so bad the noise level going into my ear was pretty much matched by what those around me could hear. I wasn't even listening to music very loud, they were just cough headphones.

I hate headphones that leak noise.

I have very sensitive ears and this noise comes across to me as a screeching type of sound and drives me nuts. I should not have to tell someone their headphones are too loud. The selfishness of some never ceases to amaze me.

I recently bought the Bose QuietComfort 15. It's fantastic. I never travel anywhere without it now.

Very wise choice! ;)
Just watch that they don't get pilfered.. I've had some devious paws laid on mine a few times..

I just updated my QC3's to a pair of QC15's and am amazed at the difference, 10x better for comfort and noise cancellation, very happy.
