I got a DJ status match in Feb this year by being persistent. So it's possible.

And I'm sure Blue Chameleon knows that OP knows its free to join...I think you'll find that Chuksta "would love to give the Virgin Aus FF program a go" with the benefits of VFF Gold. If you have QFF Gold there is little incentive to switch airlines if you have to start all over again, or much greater incentive if you don't.
I'm sure he knows that VFF is free to join.
They don't want to status match unless you show committment.
You don't want to book flights unless you get the status match.
So we are stuck.
