Seeing that QF should be shortly going via Dubai, this case highlights one of the dangers if stopping over in Dubai.

A British woman and Irish man accused of engaging in sexual activities in a Dubai taxi pleaded not guilty on Thursday, in the latest case of Westerners falling foul of the Gulf Arab emirate's decency laws.
If convicted, the pair could face jail and then deportation from the United Arab Emirates, which walks a delicate line between keeping its Muslim identity and maintaining a successful tourism industry.

Sex in taxi: Western couple faces court in Dubai

Are you kidding? Yeah because I have sex in taxis all the time, at least once a week sometimes twice.

well once I was in a very intimate situation with a young lady in a taxi. But it wasn't sex, we had to continue in the bus stop after I paid the driver. Still that wasn't sexual relations according to presidential definition.

Sorry, it is just plain dumb to have sex in taxi in a place like Dubai. And to be fair, it is not the only place in the world where you can get arrested for having sex in a public place, I'm pretty sure that in Australia you could get charged for this as well.

I read this article thus morning and immediately thought that someone would bring it up in the QF/EK thread.

The simple fact is that if you engaged in drunken sex in a taxi on a main thoroughfare against the wishes of the taxi driver in Sydney, Melbourne, London, Paris, New York, Los Angela's or any other city in the works you would end up in front of a judge. The punishment in non UAE cities might not be as high as 3 years (which I doubt they will get anyway) but you would still appear in court.

This is NOT exclusive to Dubai...

Q all the anti UAE squad....

Could not have said it better myself.

You would be in trouble with the law here or most countries for doing the same thing.

Whilst there is some truth to your comment - and whilst there is some sensationalising with the headline - let's not trivialise an important point.

And that's the fact that the UAE has some strict laws about public behaviour that are incredibly harsh by Australian standards and people could quite easily be caught out by them.

Sex in a taxi might not be the best example - but people should be aware that Dubai is not Bali or Thailand.

I really hope that there are some kind Samaritans out there guiding all the poor Australians through Dubai right at this very moment. This cough has come up before and will do again many, many more times I am sure. Hopefully I have the power to stop myself opening these threads and reading said cough in the future!

Is it really that hard? You don't spit on the street in Singapore, you don't openly insult the Prophet in Teheran, you don't have sex in a taxi in Dubai.

I guess the only residual consideration is... did they do it?

It could be just the article / journalism, but it's not clear from the text that the two individuals actually did it. They could've been just accused of it but did nothing wrong. Alternatively they could've done something else (like mouth kissing) which was used as the basis of an accusation. Or, they could be just pleading not guilty and lying in the process, because even by lying they are 'convinced' that there won't be enough evidence to convict them.

If they actually did it or even acted suggestively so, then that was definitely dumb.

Pretty sure having sex in a taxi would land you in trouble anywhere outside Dubai also...:-)

I'm not sure I could engage in coitus with a lady in a taxi, I think no matter how drink I was in would be too concerned with the germs associated with the back seat of a cab... Yuck

Just remember sex can mean a number of activities which I sure does not need to spelled out.

Also they have only been accused and deny the charges. For all we know the driver thinks hugging means sex as his parents told him when he was young, that babies come from a special type of hug mummies and daddies do! ;)

As I alluded to, I'm happy to accept the presidential standard. In the immortal words - "I did not have sexual relations with that women".

A couple of very important questions must be asked.
Did they pay with a govt issued cabcharge? ;)
Was Craig Thompson or Peter Slipper involved?

On a more serious note, are we Australians the worst bunch of travellers in the world?

Can I please nominate this post as the most ridiculous I have ever read on this forum ? Perhaps the OP should have also highlighted the folly of Jetstar or Virgin flying to Bali where carrying in a few Kg's of good stuff might land you in a bit of strife. Really, what a load of nonsense.

A very broad generalisation ReLoad.
