The change in loyalty bonus will cost me 13,000 points. Not huge but still less than I would have received under the old scheme. :(

Re: WP for the first time ever

Well if I'd selected 11F as my preferred seat, I probably wouldn't have moved either. Like you, they obviously have a preference - your change of schedule meant they had the opportunity to take that seat - and they did.

Expecting them to move is a bit rich IMHO.
They clearly DKWHI. :)

Re: WP for the first time ever

i was always taught to give my seat up for a lady
So, if a lady WP asked you to give up your seat and move to a middle seat in the back row, you would?

I see no reason why someone who selected a seat should be evicted from it just so you can have it. There's no 'You get the seat you want' benefit on the list of benefits for WP1 (nor any other tier) from what I see. If QF elect to move people for operational or elite reasons, that's entirely off-the-record benefits.

194,000 miles - that's almost double AA EXP! My hat goes off to you, Fantic125!
Damn. I feel inadequate at 186k miles for this year! (of which, around 40k were redemption flights on AA and QF, the rest are spread over VA, QF, UA, DL, AA, BA, JQ and NZ :)).

The very terms scum gold and wanker platinum were created in jest, but might be deemed offensive to newcomers on AFF.

I'm a newcomer and I find it hilarious that there are designations like PS, SC and WP.

How do you think I feel with only 126,000 miles in my entire life... :(

....or like a number of us in the forum, lots of international flights in Y.

My qualifying year for WP took 62 flights, 194,453 miles, 534 hrs BIS to achieve 1,750 SC's..... but from a particular persons perspective on this forum I shouldn't have the right to access the F lounge for frequent flyers because I'm not flying J or F.....

(Added) The other thing to consider is that even if I somehow managed to obtain a DSC offer for the entire year, I still wouldn't have qualified for P1, falling short by 100SC's. If, however, I had flown those same flights in J (as a certain poster here professes to only flying) then I would have achieved a total of 7,000 SC's; LTS in one year.
With you on the long haul Y - my calendar year so far is 239,936 miles (222,937 on OW) and we still have 2.5 months to go. Last calendar year I did 266138 miles total and this year, I look set to pass that easily.... For my last QFF membership year I fell short by about 600 SCs from P1 and that was mainly because I took long service leave for two months and flew on award flights around the world with my family. Without that 2 months of non-earning, I think I would have come really close to P1 (although may have still missed out due to so many CX flights.:().

Back on topic however, I have never received a DSC offer except for the HKG special that ran last year - even so, while I appreciated a few extra SC for that short time, it had absolutely no effect on my WP status nor my wife's PG status.... both would have easily been achieved without the HKG bonus. I have no problems with QF running DSC marketing campaigns - I would think it would help with customer loyalty to some extent, and since it seems to be quite selectively applied, I doubt it has had any effect at all on WP, the lounges or the programme at all.

That total was only for QF flights; it didn't include the other 27 flights on AA & *A which totaled another 43,770 miles!

Thankfully this calendar year has slowed down a lot for me; only 38 flights, 99,456 miles and 215 hrs BIS to date.

I'm only sitting on 565 SC's at the moment and I'm 3 months into my FF year; I might need a DSC promo to requalify for WP next year!

I think there is a very logical way to look at it.

The way I see it, and I presume QF does is try to moderate their QFF elites based on a curve (say top 1% WP1, next 5% WP, next 10% SG, next 20% PS... <- I made the distribution up)

Now, given that QFF membership is growing at x% per annum, hence one would presume that the number of elites should grow in line with that rate to keep their population % constant.

At a given point in time, QFF may run some projections and see that the distribtion has gone awry (e.g. too many SG and too few WP for instance) and may hand out a whole bunch of DSC offers to bump the SG to WP and to trim the WP population.

The biggest gripe that many have is that the lounge capacity has not kept up with the annual growth rate of QFF elites (only increases in fits and starts). Hence, whilst the WP, SG population has stayed relatively stable as a % of the QFF membership base, their absolute numbers have grown given the underlying growth in QFF (members + flights).

So there are really two solutions really:
1/ Given that lounge capacity is fixed, one may argue that the absolute number of WP / SG should be kept constant perhaps. But the only way to do this across the years is to tighten the QFF program requirements progressively each year and / or
2/ Increase the available lounge resources in line with QFF growth

Just to chime in, I've re-qualified for my WP (just about) and am sat on 33k miles ;)

That said, I can re-qualify with just under 15k next year if I so chose.

You do what you can when you can't leave QLD.

Oh, and to get back on topic, that 15k figure above is without DSC. With DSC I'm sure I could do very well next year ;) but it wouldn't be doom for WP as I hardly use the facilities. BNE yes, others no. And no F lounges.

I'm a newcomer and I find it hilarious that there are designations like PS, SC and WP.

Abbreviations really help when you're typing and in a rush ;)

I suspect there are more deaths than births.....lounges are huge on any peer comparison. IMO the ones that are complaining are the ones that would find something to complain about no matter what the reality.

I think that is a little harsh. I'd like to think that if I complain it is for a legitimate reason. I think I have some genuine concerns about what I perceive as an increase in status members and an erosion of benefits.

That would depend on if it is a recognised abbreviation or not and how much strain it puts on the person trying to decipher it.

HSP? Took me a while to work it out and I wont be using it.

Re: WP for the first time ever

I can only reiterate that flying to me is an occupational hazard. When I travel I like to maximise the comfort available to me and use whatever FF status benefits I can. The forward cabin in J on the QF A380 has 18 seats in it, no bassinet seats, and I guess does have an exclusivity about it in that advance seat selection in this cabin is only available to WP's and above. You probably need to address your question to QF, I don't make the rules about who can and can't select seats in this cabin.

Well something is wrong with the system then as me and the missus are both SG and will be firmly in Emerald City on QF1, 27th December!

I thought Golds were able to able to select the same seats as Platinums on international flights.

Which I regard as a devaluation by the way and I mean no disrespect to Golds out there.

So there it is! The WP is doomed! :p

MrsH's experience as an SG was somewhat different. I had to ring the Premium Desk to link her booking to mine to get her 12F, and the customer service person had to "override the system" to get her the seat. this would have been mid 2011.

Re: WP for the first time ever

FYI for those that have missed it, Qantas have updated the marketing on thier website:

Reason 92; "WP's you're NOT the reason we fly."

I'm pretty sure ( as in not 100% but 99%) that my TA allocated me 11K on the A380 to LHR in 2009 as an NB. I definitely sat in 11K on this my inaugural trip on the A380 and it has been my sentimental favourite ever since. This was during my year ascending from NB to WP for the first time. OT the TA was awesome but sadly moved back to the UK :(
Long winded way of saying that it was definitely possible to have a seat in Emerald City allocated as a non WP

... and the sooner they realise that, the better  :D
