I was fortunate to be status matched by TK to *G. I took the opportunity of some cheap J fares with TK out of BKK to head to Monza and Singapore to watch cars go round really, really fast. And this is how I got there and back.

Tuesday 4th September 2012

I arrived on the bus to MEL at 12:30 and was speedily through checkin... thanks to my TK express card.

I had a quick look in the NZ lounge and was suitably impressed. They were about to close so I just had time for a crisp NZ sauv blanc and a bite to eat. Then it was up to the SQ lounge.

I think I was the second or third one in there so had a bit of a look around. It is not a large lounge but well stocked. The food was freshly presented, however it was only luke-warm which was surprising.

I met with mikew in the Flounge briefly, which made it three lounges and two alliances.

I boarded SQ228 and before take-off was offered a hot towel. I chose to move across to 72G as my chosen 71A was against the door frame and the room felt a little restricted even though there was plenty of leg room. Next time I won't bother with the preferred seat and will just have a window seat. This will give me a storage locker under the window, and not much less leg room than I ended up with in the end. It was a long climb out of MEL but as soon as the seatbelt sign was off we were offered drinks. No bottled water was available, so lots of requests for glasses of water. Soon the FAs started giving me the little 110ml containers they serve with the meals.

The seat was comfortable without being too firm. The carpet looked a little worn at the edges, but only because I was looking. The upholstery seemed new. All the seats that weren't forward of the section had split trays and fold down drink holders with a small pocket for reading glasses, a nice touch I thought.

SQ228 seat.jpg

The Krisworld entertainment system was responsive with a broad range of choices - I even practiced some Italian. I watched Men In Black 3 and Brave, and still have a few new releases for the return journey.

The seatbelt sign came on about 3 hours before SIN and stayed on for an hour.

The vego meal was the blandest meal I have had on a plane. Pasta with mushroom and a tomato sauce. I don't recommend it. The regular choices were beef rendang or panfried chicken in a basil cream sauce. I asked for an extra meal as I was still hungry (I eat chicken) however I was told that MEL did not load as many as they should have and they were a bit short. The FAs didn't seem to clear rubbish and empty glasses as often as I thought they might, either. They did keep the water up to me though.

SQ228 meal 1.jpg
Must remember to take photo before I start eating.

The toilet ratio for economy on the upper deck should have been 2:88 however as one was not working it was 1:88 which meant a bit of a wait even at quiet times, or a trip downstairs where there was usually one free. A good thing we don't have to get changed at the start and end of the flight.

Dinner was served after a hot towel. A definite improvement this time... A bruschetta with roast capsicum, eggplant and artichoke topped with melted cheese. The FA also offered me a chicken dish as well, but the bruschetta was enough. They must have had enough for this service.

SQ228 meal 2.jpg

Sitting in the front row meant there was noise from the J toilet every time it was flushed, which was a little distracting. I would rather not be in this seat for a night flight and trying to sleep. Fussy, aren't I?

For the start of the flight we had a 40 knot headwind as a result of the high pressure system sitting over Victoria, but that soon turned around to a 50 knot tailwind which got us on the ground about 15 minutes early. This information was all displayed on the flight path section of the AVOD system.

Wednesday 5th September 2012

I awoke from a pleasant sleep in Hotel 81 Tristar and was back on the MRT by 10am
Hotel 81 Tristar bed.jpg

I called into the Silverkris lounge in terminal 2 for a quick bite. Then I tried to get into the Gold lounge but no go. I took a walk to terminal 1 and sampled the Thai lounge which was pleasant. After a drink and a bite it was back to T2 and the Silverkris lounge for a Tiger beer (on tap) and found the food selection had been updated, so I had another bite. If I have time next time I might go looking for the staff canteens that have been mentioned in other threads.

Onto SQ974 for Bangkok. Seat 44D was about in the middle of the first section of economy. I think I had a *G shadow too. *G were called with the initial boarding group, however this was not checked at all so it was a bit of a freeforall. The flight was about 3/4 full and there seemed to be plenty of room for HLO in the lockers.

Lunch was a vego rice with tofu and sauce dish and mushrooms and bok choi on the side. Quite tasty, and every time the FA walked past the red wine was topped up... nice. Chocolate ice-cream for dessert went down a treat too.

Half way through the flight the seatbelt sign came on for turbulence once again. I hope this isn't a *A enhancement that I have attracted to my flights.

We landed without further incident and I was soon through BKK immigration. I then found the signs for the train and it was off to discover how efficient Bangkok's transit system is. The answer, very. I bought a 35baht skytrain ticket to the city and then bought a re-loadable card for the metro system for 230baht (30 baht for the card, 50 deposit and 150 credit). I had done a bit of homework and so knew which train station to transfer, and this involved a short walk from the overhead skytrain to the underground metro system.

The metro dropped me across the road from the Bankok Sofitel So.

I was escorted to the 9th floor for checkin and found as an Accor Platinum I had an upgrade but only to a Deluxe room so had to pay 1000baht for the Exec lounge access. I paid as it included evening drinks and canapés (read: dinner) and breakfast the following morning. I was also offered a free drink at the Mixo bar and an invitation to have a drink with the So management team as well.

I headed upstairs to view my room and was taken aback by the set up. Sofitel So has four themes for their rooms: fire, earth, wood and metal with water to be opened soon. My room was metal with lots of white panels and chrome and glass. Lots of clever cupboards hid the coffee machine, wardrobe and drawers. The shower was large with great big fluffy towels. It wasn't long before I was giving it a good test. I was not staying long enough to try the bath but it was also large... next time.

Sofitel SO bed.jpgSofitel SO bath.jpg

I got into the lift to head upstairs to the Exec lounge only to have the housekeeping manager introduce herself. Then it was into the lounge. A vodka/chambourd coughtail started the night, but then I stuck with Singha, the local beer. There was a nice selection of cold snacks with some hot treats brought to my table later on. I stayed until 6.45 then headed down to Mixo. I was met by the F&B manager, then Paul the ‘Just Say So Guru’, then Chantelle the Guest Coordinator. A few glasses of complimentary red and I was quite comfortable.

I slept very well that night, although had to put the digital clock face down as it was very bright.

Up the next morning, a quick shower and then breakfast. Yum. Fresh fruit, juice and some scrambled eggs. It took a couple of goes to make sure that scrambled eggs was understood, so next time I might ask for an omelette instead!

I grabbed my bags, asked the hotel to call me a taxi, and checked out. I stood waiting for the taxi, and waited, and waited. It was raining so demand was high that morning. I gave up waiting and found the metro and Skytrain worked just as well in reverse! As time was tight, I took the express Skytrain which cost 90baht, but was certainly quicker.

Checking in to TK65 took no time at all and a priority pass took me through immigration quickly as well. Then it was off to find a lounge or two. I departing from concourse F so went to the Royal Orchid lounge in E, had a croissant and a coke then headed across to the Royal Silk lounge for a juice. I think I preferred the Silk lounge. It was a little bigger and had a better selection of food and drink. I am not sure what the access requirements for each of the lounges are as I was traveling business and was also *G.

I headed off to the boarding lounge and spent about 15 minutes for boarding to commence. When the door opened for the J and Elite/Elite gold to board there was a bit of a rush. Hmmm, that didn't last long. The boarding agent checked every boarding pass and soon turned away anyone who was not eligible! QF take note.

I got myself settled in 2K and was served champagne, albeit a little warm. The AVOD system showed the safely message in both Turkish and English with no interaction from the FAs. If ever you fly TK look out for the scene where the FA is shown blowing in the life jacket tube. I soon was told that there was a 'technical problem' and our flight would be delayed by 20 minutes. We took off an hour and 20 minutes later. Hmmm. During our wait at the gate the plane was de-powered for about 20 minutes which I have never experienced before. I guess the techs needed to swap some part over without getting zapped.

Ubiquitous 'leg-room' shot

We finally took off and I am a little disappointed at the delay, as that will mean less time in the IST lounge. Pre lunch drinks were served and then lunch itself. I started with eggplant, a vegie samosa and a green salad. This was followed by a tasty broccoli soup. Main course was a baby corn curry with wild rice and bok choi and carrot. Delicious. There is an onboard chef who is in charge of cooking/presentation and it shows.

I mentioned to the chef that I was allergic to nuts. He was a little taken aback and said that I needed to let the airline know. If they knew I didn't eat nuts they would not load them on the plane... for anyone. Yikes, to deprive so many of so much. I am not sure I wish to hold that sort of power. Maybe I will forget to tell them next time.

As I was finishing lunch, I looked across the aisle to see a gentleman had already reclined to sleep. The FA had spotted him as well and found an extra blanket to make sure he was snug... and tucked him in!

I realise that I am status matched to TK from QF, however with this level of service, I am thinking I may have to status match the reverse in future. I have flown QF Int J in the past, but TK wins hands down for service IMHO. This is only my first leg of four, so we will see how the service averages out.

I watched a movie and then settled down for a snooze. The beds are almost flat, but not horizontal - a bit like the Skybeds Mk I. I still managed to catch 40 winks. It is a daytime flight after all. The inflight magazine listed a couple of movies that were not on the system, so I guess this aircraft is still waiting for its monthly update.

The second meal service was provided with not as much pomp as the first, but it was still pleasant. I usually state I am vego on the profile as the choices available do not usually suit my diet. There is a good selection of food in J so this may not really be necessary. In fact the second 'special meal' I was provided with was not quite to the same standard as the general meal choices. That may be down to vegetarianism being a bit unusual in some countries so menus may not have developed quite as much sophistication as in Australia. That being said, QF is Particularly poor at providing variety for its vego passengers. One four leg JASA I did earlier this year had me being offered the same sandwich variety each flight, at different times of the day, whilst watching the other pax being offered at least two hot choices.

We arrived in Istanbul about an hour late so there were a few passengers who had tight connections. I had originally three hours, so was not one of them. One passenger was heading for JFK and he was escorted from the plane to his waiting aircraft which was waiting for him. We parked away from the terminal and were shown onto buses. The first bus was quite small, intended for the J passengers and a few others. We arrived at the terminal at the same time as two other buses so the transit area was a bit full, with some people pushing past to make their connections. The security check, whilst the standard liquids check and xray, seemed a bit perfunctionary. Then I arrived in the main hall at IST.

This was undoubtably the most chaotic airport scene I had ever seen. There seemed to be no order to anything and it was extremely crowded which only added to it. People were heading this way and that, very much like people wander aimlessly at a busy railway station.

The lounge at IST was all it has been cracked up to be. At 6pm it was obviously very busy but there were lots of food and drink stalls, a number of kitchens and a roving wine cart. I had a shower and it was quite spacious with a nice towel, slippers and dressing gown. I had two hours in the lounge, but could happily have spent longer. On my return trip I have nearly six hours so wish granted. TK offer tours of Istanbul if you have a layover greater than six hours. Some connections can be up to ten hours so it would be worthwhile investigating.

We boarded TK1877 to MXP and this time it was a free for all. There was no announcement, some staff just opened the door and waited. I found my seat 2C and settled in for the last leg of my journey to Monza.

Once again TK have outdone themselves with the meal selection. I had a vego meal again, but there was a choice of chicken, beef and fish for the carnivores amongst us. The food and service was excellent, and even included a selection of liqueurs afterwards. All this for a two hour twenty minute flight.

On arrival at MXP the terminal was nearly deserted. I was waved through immigrations with only a cursory glance at my passport. It was stamped though - on a random page completely out of sequence! Outside and a kind taxi driver rang the Ibis hotel to request the courtesy bus and I was soon checked in, upstairs and asleep.

Friday 7th to Tuesday 11th September 2012

The next morning after breakfast I caught the courtesy bus back to the terminal, jumped on the train and headed into Milan to my apartment for the week. I have found if staying anywhere for a length of time it is worth looking at private apartments as a budget option. I can cater for myself and have a little more room than a hotel.

After getting myself settled I headed out to the track. This meant a trip on the Metro to get to Centrale (central railway station), then a train to Monza, then a courtesy bus to get closer to the track, then a 30 minute walk to get to the gate. All this as the temperature was in the high 20s. I found a bar to buy some water from and made a mental note to bring my own the next day. It wasn't long after I had found my seat (on the main straight opposite the pits) before the F1s fired up their engines for their practice session. LOUD, VERY LOUD. Earplugs and noise canceling headphones were needed. I watched the practice session and then made the return trip back to Milan.

I will detail the Monza GP in a separate trip report, but here is a view from my seat across the track to the pits.

I had been in touch with mikew and so we arranged to meet up for dinner at a place his landlord had recommended. Not being able to speak the language I took a punt and ended up with roast chicken and potatoes. Not quite the local specialty I was expecting. I enjoyed a couple of beers and then it was off home.

Two further days of GP action with a disappointing result from Red Bull - both Vettel and Webber failed to finish.

I took a tip from mikew and visited the Duomo in the centre of Milan. I caught the lift to the roof, and unlike other cathedral tours I have done, noticed no guards or supervision. So, like any Aussie who has had a busy weekend I lay down on the roof and had a nap.

On my last full day in Milan I chose to visit the Leonardo da Vinci 'Codex Atlantico' exhibition. This is a display of some of do Vinci's collected manuscripts, spread over two museums, and it was fascinating to see some of the concepts and ideas that he had had over 500 years ago.

After the landlord visited and handed back my deposit, it was on to the Metro and then airport train to MXP for my first leg of the day, TK1896 MXP-IST. I grabbed a brioche (croissant) and coffee at the central railway station to keep me going until I found the lounge. I am going to miss European bakeries/cafes.

The lounge was a joint one for a myriad of airlines. There were only some snacks to eat and mostly soft drinks and spirits to drink. I found the one beer hidden at the back of the fridge, so I had two. A couple of chocolate bars made their way into my bag.

Boarding was delayed due to the late arrival of the plane so we looked like being about an hour late out of MXP. It seems the gods are conspiring to keep my time in the IST lounge short once more. Oh well, I will still have 5 hours. There was no priority boarding, and once the BPs were checked at the top of the air bridge they were not checked again. The 737 only has one aisle and we were boarding from the front so there really is no need for someone to tell me how far back I am sitting. The advantage of sitting in J is to only need to count to single figures! A choice of a few different juices were offered before we took off.

There were a couple of bags that would not fit in the overhead lockers. They were placed on the floor in front of the unoccupied 1A/C. Interesting.

Soon after takeoff the seatbelt sign was flashed to signal we could move around the cabin, but the sign itself stayed on for the rest of the flight. This was the same with the other TK flights so I am not sure how the flight deck signal for everyone (inc FAs) to be seated in cases of turbulence etc. This question was sort of answered when we did indeed hit turbulence. An announcement came over advising people to take their seats due to the weather conditions; this did not seem to extend to the FAs though, as they continued to serve lunch. This is the third TK flight out of three that has had turbulence... I think it must be the QF gods punishing me for straying from the OW path.

A hot towel and a menu were distributed, followed soon after by a two course lunch. My vego meal came with a menu this time so I knew what I was to be eating. A nice touch. Lunch was again delicious. Each of the items was quite flavoursome. The meal was followed with the tea and coffee service, with liquors if desired. I tried the tea, and it actually tasted like tea, unlike the Australian domestic offerings.

The in flight entertainment on the main screen was the standard flight path display however it was interspersed with advertisements for local Turkish businesses.

We landed about half an hour late, but I was soon through the transit screening area and sitting in the THY lounge wining and dining the next few hours. The lounge was busy at 7pm when I got there and while it ebbed and flowed a bit it was still busy at midnight when I left for my flight. There were quite a few international flights still to depart after mine, so quite the 24 hour operation.

Some nice features of the lounge include clear lockable lockers so you can find your luggage after 'just one more', and smaller lockers with a powerpoint and selection of charging adapters so you can leave your phone charging securely. There are power-points on every edge of each of the curved walls for charging where you sit. There also many power points located in the floor near free standing tables. The entertainment room has nine screens showing various programs. All you need to do is tune the supplied headphones to the one you want to focus on.

TK68 IST-BKK got away on time after we were bussed to the aircraft. The service started off much the same as the other three flights but unfortunately did not hold the same level of standard. At least there was no turbulence this flight.

The FA responsible for the LHS aisle in J did not seem to be cut from the same cloth as the others. He lacked finesse and did not seem to be as motivated. This showed throughout the flight to its detriment. I can only assume he was a stand-in from Y who had not had the complete training required to fulfill the role. I understand that people need on the job training, but he should have had more preparation.

The food was excellent once again, with a couple of choices from the regular menu mixed in with my vego selection. I can particularly recommend the spicy lentil soup. I have now removed my meal preference from my profile as the regular choice of meals in J is sufficient without having a special meal ordered.

We duly arrived in Bangkok and with a priority pass was through immigration and on the train very quickly. I chose the express this time and it dropped me about 300m from the King Power Bangkok Pullman. My room upgrade was to a deluxe so no exec lounge this visit. The room was very pleasant and spacious with a king bed, couch and desk chair. There were also lots of accessible power points.

A nice little touch was a little rubber duck on the bath tub. I think this little 'International Duck of Mystery' might do quite a bit of traveling in the future.

I spent my time wandering round Bangkok, finding different places to eat, and restocking the hotel room mini-bar. A very relaxing eight days. I probably could have done more in the way of sight seeing, but it was a pleasant interlude between two very hectic Grand Prix so I didn't worry too much.

Nice work Jessica, :D

Enjoying the TR thus far... The lovely large clear pics are satisfying.

Cheers,

Eight days later of doing very little and it was off to the airport to catch SQ975 to Singapore for the next GP.

The express train took 20 minutes from the heart of Bangkok. Another 20 minutes and I was through immigration. No express pass this time as I am only in Y to SIN. I picked up my duty free that I had purchased a few days earlier and then off to the SKL. It was deserted when I walked in so I chose a seat and had a spot of breakfast. I think the early morning crowd must have just left as the lounge had that 'lived in' feel. A reasonable selection of food and drinks - even Haagen Däaz ice-cream.

Down to the boarding lounge at 11.30 with another passport and BP check and then a wait for 30 minutes before we boarded. The flight was fairly full but boarding was smooth, and with no real issues regarding carry on luggage. I was served a pasta and tomato sauce lunch which was uninspiring. The regular choices were beef and pasta or chicken and rice. The chicken did look tasty. I listened to some music on the IFE and found there was quite a bit of 'snap, crackle and pop' much as one would expect from a record player. I am not sure if it was due to the Bose QC15s blocking out the external noise and so picking up some distortion.

Lunch - I finally remembers to shoot first, eat second!

The Mercury Boutique Hotel in Chinatown was not far from the Outram Park MRT station. I had seen the reviews in trip adviser and was not expecting luxury. Some of the rooms were reported to not have a window. What I got was a room with a window, a bed and not much else. The shower and lavatory were in the same small cubicle so that was a first for me. I had to leave the loo paper out or else it would have been very soggy. The room included wifi and breakfast, however I never got to sample the latter as I slept in each morning. It's a tough life. The wifi was reasonably quick. I would stay there again at a pinch, however were it not F1 season there would be better options.

After unpacking into the cupboard with no shelves I headed to the Stamford to collect my tickets. Up to the fourth floor and I soon had three passes, one for each day. Back to the MRT and off to the Marina Bay Sands to meet up with Lowjhg and pmdg7444 for dinner. We dined at db Bistro Moderne which was not cheap but absolutely fabulous - beer: $15, duck confit: $35. I guess the prices are not too bad, but I have been spoilt with Singapore's hawker stands.

After dinner it was off to the track for the second F1 practice session. I will cover the GP in a separate trip report.

Sunday September 23rd 2012

I met up with Boeta at Raffles for a drink and then we headed off to a cheaper bar for a couple of German beers before heading to the track.

On both Saturday and Sunday evenings I was fortunate to see Mama Kin performing with her band. She is a very talented WA singer/songwriter and she put on a great show. I took the opportunity to have a chat after each set, and she even remembered me from a previous show in Melbourne. Noice. She is not a GP fan however she had access to a corporate suite as part of her package so she was going to see the race. Hopefully there is another convert.

Monday September 24th 2012

Up early this morning for SQ217, departing SIN at 9:55. By the time I had got to the airport, checked in and got through immigration I had not much more than an hour in the T3 lounge. It was spacious with a reasonable breakfast selection - I had scrambled eggs and french toast. It did not take long for most seats to be occupied, however I already had my spot. I watched people come and go for a while then headed down to the gate for the security screening line. This was reasonably efficient so I had a fifteen minute wait before boarding started. *G were second to board after F and J and this was fairly well adhered to, although I couldn't actually see anyone policing it.

Upstairs and settled into 73K, a fairly forward window seat. We were offered juice/beer/water and a hot towel before pushing back. A long taxi from T3 around past T1 before takeoff. It was not long and seatbelt signs were off and drinks offered. My vego meal came out soon after and like the MEL-SIN flight it was uninspiring. Capsicum in tomato sauce with plain rice, mushrooms and bok choi. I think I might provide SQ some feedback about their long haul food offerings. Fortunately the FA was able to rustle up some instant noodles which helped appease my appetite. Lunch was followed up with a Magnum icecream.

SQ217 meal 1.jpg

The cabin crew do not seem to do the rounds as much as QF, which means using the call button to get a refill. I would normally get up myself, however did not want to disturb my sleeping neighbour. I had a look at the onboard wifi... I had to take my iPad out of flight mode to do so - shock! $10 for 10MB, $25 for 30MB. I did not subscribe so cannot comment on the speed of the service. The inflight entertainment was just as comprehensive as the flight over with current release movies and music, as well as some talking books.

The second service fared a little better, with a mushroom in cream sauce on brioche with carrots and peas. The cabin crew were quick to remove the finished trays, and were not too keen on offering further drinks with about an hour and a half to go.

SQ217 meal 2.jpg

We landed half an hour early at 1845 however had to wait for a couple of wheelchair passengers from J to disembark so it was closer to 1900 before we stepped off. The advantage of HLO was that I was the first of 400 people to customs, having done my ePassport immigration. Ten minutes later I was in a taxi and heading for home... thinking of my next destination.

The wash up

This was my first time flying with TK and SQ. I can't really compare the two as TK was in J (for about $3100 BKK-IST-MXP return) and SQ was in full Y (about $1200 MEL-SIN-BKK return). I would be happy to fly with them both again, although I think I would choose QF Y over SQ. The SQ premium seat ($50) wasn't worth it, and I didn't even sit in it! Their regular Y seat had enough leg room for the 8 hour flight.

TK is probably not quite there as a premium carrier based on their hard product, but their food and service was excellent (last flight notwithstanding). I would be more than happy to choose them again, and I would like to spend a few days in IST as well. Time did not quite allow me that pleasure this trip. I was in the older J seats so it is possible I am being a little unfair.

This trip has earned me about 33,000 status miles, however have had no indication of re-qualifying for *G. It may be that I have to earn the original 40,000 points to qualify before I can re-qualify. The points are good until 2015, though, so I am not sure.

I pack light. 8kg was enough for me for a week in Milan, a week in Bangkok and a few days in Singapore. This allowed me to be off the flight quickly and ahead of the pack for immigration and customs.

Now where's that booking engine for the next trip?

Thanks Jess, very enjoyable TR with excellent pics and insightful summaries for each part of the journey! TK in J might have to get a look in next trip :p

Was excellent to catch up in SIN too! Happy travels!

I enjoyed the beers, too.

I am just disappointed that I missed the new J seats which I think are fully horizontal. Next time.

Nice TR thanks for sharing (not many tm reports here too!).

No GP shots? What sort of seating did you have? What was catering like trackside? How did they compare to the Melbourne event?

Great report Jess.
How was getting to/from the Monza circuit.. I have heard some horror stories about some of the Euro circuits (ex Monte Carlo and Barcelona)

then again I did KL this year and it wasnt as bad as I had expected.
